Edelbrock CNC porting, do I Need? - 09/27/12 04:58 PM

Hi, Am Building A 451 Low Deck Stroker, & am At The Stage Of Adding The Heads. Initial Plans Were To Have My O.O.T.B Edelbrock Heads CNC Ported,But Wondering If It Would Be Worth The Cost Right Now Concidering I Am Only Using The MP 528 Solid Cam & Is Strictly A Street Machine Not Seeing More Than 6000rpm.

You can get by out of the box heads. It will not make as much HP, but it will be enough to put a smile on your face, especially on the street. you can save the porting for a future upgrade. OOTB Eddies will surely be enough for the traction that you will get out on the street.

Do you mean the MP .557 cam as I have not heard of a MP .527 cam. Or maybe the .528 as thats a solid also. But anyway you should run good with the OOTB Eddy RPM heads. I ran 11.40's @ 116 with a 440 and 906 heads at 3700 lbs with my old combo. Good luck with it , Ron

An alternative to full porting is "prep" by a good shop. This usually (and should) include check and touch up of the valve job, check and touch up of valve to guide clearance and quick clean up of ports and bowls. Over .5" lift most folks will want 10 degree locks as well. Cost is much lower than porting and its cheap insurance.

I gained 55 hp on my stroker small block by going to a SDSS hand ported head - and single plane intake - no other changes

my 430 small block also gained another 61 hp on top of that by swapping cams, a set of MCH CNC'd heads along with a super victor intake

Do you need it? No.
But consider that it will make more power,they are off the car saving time/labor later,and will support more power/future upgrades with less work.

The choice is yours but if it doesent break the bank go ahead and do it now.

That car is somewhere around Penn area purple, car, sold couple years ago, running 9.70 there now?? last I heard

Car weight was 3130 w/o driver! scaled at G M P
It was heck of a combo, orginal 340 car to boot

maybe my car will run ok..
451
400 block
je dome tops on eagle h beams
eagle crank
hard filled to water pump hole
rbre billet main
440-1 heads with 2.25 valve other then that out the box
t&d 1.5 rockers
cam motion roller 715 lift after lash
indy 400 intake with 4500 top
727 trans with either 8" turbo action 5600 or 9.5 dynamic 5000
73 duster chassis car
with 9" rear 4.30 gear
should be around 2400/2500 ready..
