I will try to show what goes into no seat/no guide "blank slate" pair of w9 heads.

First pic is the starting point.

The first step will be to put CuBe intake seat in then I will put set of 5/16 CHE guides.

The guides need to be in and sized to recut counter bore/intake seat ring due to interlocking seats.

Dude,You got some kinda weird diet but you sure do nice work. This will be a good post for those who really do not know just much work really goes into a goo set of heads. It would be interesting to see just how much time each step took also.

Oh my. They look mighty tasty! Are they microwavable?

Just kidding Brett, this will be a very interesting thread. So expanding the heads and contracting the seats, do they drop right in, or require some tapping? Can they be drawn in using a technique similar to installing roller cam bearings? This is cool stuff for me, I just learned how to change a flat the other day.

We used to use dry ice and alcohol years ago and when we switched over to liquid nitrogen for shrinking pins and bushing I thought I died and went to heaven. Heat and cold works good but cold and colder works GREAT.

Go to know these heads will support 440 c.I.what valve size?any idea on flow numbers you're looking for? Do you know anything about the short block the heads going on?

my bud has a set of those w9's from w5...flow is 399@ 800+ lift w some left on the table nice thread w5.

Re: High end W9 head build up start to finish. - 09/22/12 01:57 PM

Good numbers sounds like Brett is bad a**.would those head work good on a 430 inch short block? Talking about a set that flows 399

my thought is that would be perfect..small ci motor would require tons of rpm (tuff on valve springs) 430 or 440 means less rev's and TONS of torque~!

I have 430 inches now and a new set of w9s just getting info on what these heads are capable of

Can you say airflow.after this I think a lot of people will say w9 are a good head. I have a new set in the box that I will get done that I paid $500 for them I could be wrong but I don't think you can find a new set of w8 for $500

I don't know that I have ever heard anyone say that the W9 is a bad head. They just never got much of a chance to prove themselves because there wasn't any real development work done on them. The only highly developed ones were the RP versions that were done for the Sprints and work well for those applications. I think as more people see how much potential there is in these heads that they will be pleasantly surprised. It is basically just a lighter W8 and new castings are available.

I have heard the RP is a real disappointment on gasoline, just doesnt do much if any better than the "standard" W9, but much better when on methanol. Who is casting the w9 now? I know Zeus is long gone.

They took a W-7 and a W-8 and came up with a light
weight W-9.... like you said I never heard anything
bad on them... I like my W-9s(CNCd Chapmans), this
winter I'll put a cam in mine so its more in line to
what it needs... I'll see if they can re-grind my
current one or I might have to send my spare blank
in to get cut

BTW there's a guy on my Facebook that I've talked to once he has a 430 I think but it's has w9 heads 14.5 compression 760 roller stock Holley 1050 car weighs 2950. He said that it has 6 degrees less timing off the line because it either blows the tires or put it on the bumper. The car has a 315 DR tire if i remember right the 60 ft was a 1.19 and went 5.52@125

Again, I give Brett a big on his effort. His port looks amazing and performs just as good. I can't wait to see what these heads do on the combo they are going on. I think they fill a much needed gap and should make alot of prople consider staying with SB power if they are looking for something in the 800 to 850 hp range.

Re: High end W9 head build up start to finish. - 10/12/12 08:43 PM

Brett, are these heads being done with Dennis Wheet? I am the kid from WI that sent my W9's out to Dennis to be ported with some new CNC program, just wondering if this is the program I'm getting. Also I'm still looking for parts to be able to use my heads. I know you have talked to my engine man Pete from CP Motorworks, if you come across anything let us know. Thanks -Dylan.

Re: High end W9 head build up start to finish. - 10/12/12 11:00 PM

Yes Dennis and I worked together on this port.
Your heads are close to this but they are 59* so pushrod pinch will be smaller on your heads and this is bigger program altogether than what was run in your heads.

Yes I have talked with Pete on your set up.

Re: High end W9 head build up start to finish. - 11/15/12 04:18 PM

Looking goood!

I got a set of W9's waiting to see what tricks you pull off to see if they will be worth using in a street motor or not.

I got a set of W9-RP going on my race motor.

I think many people have tried using W9s & RPs in applications that they just weren't made for. In short actually putting too much head on an engine for what it really needs. This is what I have seen why a few have said the W9's just didn't stack up to expectations.

I have recently been looking at Big Block and Hemi Gen2 heads and was amazed that you have to get into full race heads before you find heads that have valves sizes and flow numbers that compare to W9's.

So the W9 is a SB head that can keep up with BB heads if you want to build the Shortblock to do the same. Either RPMs or BIG CUI or a Lil of Boff.

FYI: I was told by the shop that I bought my W9-RPs from (the were set-up by AllPro) that they would flow 400-425cfm depending on what bench they were on. They also told me only place I could get any more or better flow was from Reher-Morrison BUT would probably cost an arm&leg for another 25cfm.
