KOS CARS - 09/06/12 09:07 PM

I was looking thru an old Mopar Action mag and seen Tony Scopa's Lime Green 70 RR. I remember him selling it and then thought, what ever happened to some of the KOS cars??
I know Leon still ahs his,I think Daurty still has his HEMI Cuda and Fred has the old Chapman 69 Super Bee. Anyone know any info about some of the KOS cars??
Out of all the KOS cars,I would want Chapmans old 69 Super Bee and Leons Valiant.

My pops hemicuda is sitting in the garage at the house. Hasn't run or moved under its own power in 11 years now. Bill's old 71 RR is hopefully gonna be running some next year.

I love that car and it ran awsome!I saw it run at norwalk and later got to meet Tony through Koffels working on the dragster. The engine was a Phoenix W/B1 heads i believe.

What did that car ever run? I never really remember him running good at any KOS events. There was a duster that was like an aqua color that raced a few times with a nitrous hemi also. I don't remember that guys name either. I built my Duster because I loved Roger Laudy's purple Duster back in the day. He still has it also.

Im sure you know ALOT of about the cars raced in KOS,where they are,etc since your dad was heavy into the KOS. What ever happened to Richard O' Malley??? We made some GOOD NOS plates!!!
Posted By: sdaurity

Re: KOS CARS - 09/07/12 01:15 AM

LOL The plates were good back in the day. But like anything else, alot better options out there now. Richard comes by the shop occasionally to borrow money, ask for parts for his truck, want me to charge parts for his truck and pay me back when he gets his next check. He is a really smart guy but has no drive, or good money/business sense.

Well that explains why I didn't see it my pops had quit racing by the time anybody had went that fast. The last race I remember my pops going to was bristol in 01 or 02 I can't remember. I do remember Bill had just put the 600" motor in the avenger. I'll have to call and see if he remembers when that was.

2005 was when Markuwics ran St. Louis. Prock and Monty were tuning. Monte had the chassis working really well. Bill ran Bristol with the 600" the last year O'mally was involved, 03', I think. Let's see Dale ran the deal in 05' the last year of it. Dan Dye 04'. Hit and miss in 03' believe that was the year at Bristol.

Anyone remember John Hammit's (spelling may be wrong) teal 69 Charger? It was an 8-second show piece. i think he won best of show at E-Towns "Mopar Atlantic Nats" one year, then went rounds in KOS. I think he had issues with a trans-brake, and lost a very winnable race. He also worked at a local SE PA. speed shop...BP Speed. I think he still has it too. TD

He has no desire to race a car actively anymore. We built him a 69 super bee that he drives to cruise ins and takes to the local mopar shows. It goes low 10's and he hasn't had to do anything but change the oil and the nitrous bottle in years. He doesn't want to work or spend money on it like he use to. I'm not real sure what happened to Bill's cuda. I will ask though.

I think I seen pics of the Super Bee...Is it Black with orange accents??

Thats the one.

I know he wrecked it at the KOS race at VMP in '99 IIRC...

You guys got smoke coming out of my ears trying to remember all these dates. LOL I do remember he was racing my pops and they still talk about it every time they see each other to this day. They were side by side at the 1/8 looking at each other and Bill took that hard right into the wall. My pops warped the rotors on the car and stopped it at the 1st pull off past the 1/4 and pulled the car up the golf cart road beside the track and was the 1st person there to ck on him. It was like a big family racing then.

I think I have pics of your dads car on the return road with Bills car on the track against the wall. Me and a buddy hopped the fence and got Bill out of the car....of course the track officials werent too impressed once they got there that we were on the track and had gotten him out already....

Re: KOS CARS - 09/07/12 08:42 PM

Messing with all his toys and mowing grass. He doesn't really do much at the painting shop anymore. He has been getting a little more into racing again here lately. Getting rid of alot of the show cars/ drivers.

Re: KOS CARS - 09/07/12 08:57 PM

I remember first meeting Bill in the staging lanes at IRP back around 90 or so. Both our roadrunners were street cars and he was showing me this new thing he just put on his car, the orange 71 runner. A nitrous plate!! LOL

You must be thinking of a different car...the one pictured belongs to Randy Knipe and he built the car from the ground up...it's a 3,900lb street car with a Dwayne Porter 496 with Indy EZ heads and runs 10 teens...I built the transmission in the car and did some other small stuff on it...

Wayne, do you have randy knipes number.

I heard today that mike Robbins has his demon back and a motor in it...... Looks like next year our 10.5" series will be picking up.

Is the monster Mopar heads up class worthy of using the name KOS?

Always loved these cars, especially in the earlier days when cars like Steve Baughman's Duster were competitive. I saw him actually CRUISING that Duster at the Mopar nats YEARS ago. Posted By: Leon441

Re: KOS CARS - 09/08/12 11:20 AM

Didn't take pictures. Was driving the wheels off of it.

Everything is for sale. Always has been.

I watch people sell buy race cars all the time. Like they are never happy with what they have. i have always figured that it would be a huge loss to sell and start over. If I continue to race it will be in this car. The car is just a great driver. I know where every wire, bolt, weld is on the car. With a couple exceptions they were all done by me. The last season I raced I was Fri night heads up racing and cut five .401 lights in a row followed by a .398 in the final. You just can't do that with a bad car. Won the points in an index series where most loosing rounds were due to something I did to mess it up. One round loss was due to a broken valve spring. I knew something happened right away. Sent the data off thinking ignition trouble. MSD did not even notice anything in the RPM curve. I knew where I fealt the issue and was able to point it out. The round in question the car went a 5.96 on a 5.95 dial.

Would I be able to jump right in and have this success with another car.

If I sold it would have to be for the right price. OVer the years a few have been interested. They backed off due to price and then spent double trying to build a car. Most of these guys never made it to the track and have an illegal car for the class they desired.

A new car would be one I built. And that just takes too long.

Leon

For the most part of the series the rules were very close to NMCA super street and ez street rules as I remember?? Not sure after my pops quit racing in 02. I didnt get started till 07 after it was officially dead? For the most part of my pops racing it was on the 31w tire but they were starting to have 29" true10 races around here before he parked it and it was going 5 teens at 140 in 1/8 and weighed 3300 lbs? I know we are messed up 70 Roadrunner noses on 70 Bees. But they put the 70 Bee fenders on the Superbirds from the factory. It fooled the editor of Pop. Hot Rod too even though I told them it was a 70 Bee they got it wrong in the mag. article. Then to top it off Scott retires the Bee and puts the whole drivetrain into our version of a SUPERTBIRD. We miss you BIRD you going to Indy?

Bird......what do u consider a true 10.5?(28's/29.5's)
Posted By: Leon441

Re: KOS CARS - 09/09/12 11:33 AM

Bird again you are full of Bull.

For years KOS was one class Super Street. The rule was 28X10.5. How do I know. I had a 28X11 Goodyear and was not allowed to run.

KOS SS was generally following the rules of NMCA SS and later we were allowed 29.5X10.5. Then by the year 2001 allowed 31X10.5W and then following NMCA, sense a lot of us ran both classes, KOS followed allowing 33X10.5W, but with a weight penalty.

EZ street ran smaller tires. Later they, following NMCA's Easy Street class they too stretched the tire rules to larger than 28X10.5.

Mucle Street was smaller. I think a 28X10.5 street tire or equivalant was their rule.

Bird, KOS was ran from the early 90's all the way to the last year in 2005. We ran MSD 7AL boxes with a retard box and no progressives or timed timing controllers. So why are you trying to diss the series? For those years it was what it was. No TT5 as you comment in the later years, but we ran by rules which were more restrictive than any of the classes ran for Heads up street cars today.

Never winning a round of KOS racing is no reason to run it down. A series where many people met a lot of freinds, saw their car on ESPN or in the mags for the first times.

Bird I take up for you all the time but BS statements like this is why a lot of people don't care for you.

In EZ Street it had to be a DOT Tire. I dont think anything more than a 11 inch street tire was allowed. We used 315 BFG's on ours because thats what we used in the NMCA/NSCA T/A Class.

Whats the difference between this and the 10.5 class that we run in your opinion other than the name....which we are switching to as long as Im not stepping on anyones toes.

Maybe you have the inside scoop?

Can ya post some pics of your dads Cuda?? Maybe some pics as it sits now??

Re: KOS CARS - 09/10/12 01:13 AM

I have sold tires for years and can answer this question. There is a huge differnce in the 28 and the 33. It has nothing to do with being a true 10.5 tire. Most 31 and 33 W tires only measure 10.8 inches. There were some 11.2's tires but they were bad new in series like NMCA and KOS as if they ever got wide your run was thrown out.

MT used to issue contact patch measurements for their tires. A 28X10.5 tire you have X amount of square inches of contact patch. A 28X11.5 you have say X+Y for contact patch. A 29X10.5 would give you more than X+Y. An inch of height is worth more than and inch of width. The taller the tire the better off you are with contact patch.

I catch a lot of flack as I now own some 31X13 steam rollers. But, I also raced on 285/60/15 McCreary round track DOT tires back in the day. SO I know a little bit about how to run a small tire.

EZ street you could run slicks and I think they changed that to street tires later maybe.
Mike had slicks on the Polara in 2004.
We ran in Muscle street and it was a fun class but no one ever talks about us. ha ha

There was a weight per cubic inch rule of like 7.5 lbs for SS and 8.5 lbs for EZ seemed pretty effective. I know my buddy ran 29/13.50/15 ET Streets in EZ.

Rcokingham she showed up taking some pics with car. She was up in the Motor home changing. All you had to do was look and see a little more than the dental floss showed. Bristol she came around again. My wife, kids, buddies, wife, his kids, his mom, my parents were all there. My wife was very pissed. Now I love to look at the girls but ussually would have a few ones with me and some dark lighting. At the track was not very appropriate.

Yeah Josh waiting on the funds to buy a motor. Not exactly what I want. But, it screams. Would love to go back and run 7.5 lbs per cubic inch.

But, I aint running no blind draw. How can you be king of anything when the ladder is set up like a stinking lottery ticket.

I'll continue to race where we run for qualifying position on a ladder.

Yep; I LOVED the KOS cars and they were definitely part of what inspired me to push on the MoPig to be a legit 10-second street car.
