Need to lose weight o my 71 Dart - 08/16/12 09:57 PM
I finally got my Dart going and weighed it at the track. 3550 race ready. I have a glass front bumper and aluminum bumper brackets, otherwise its all steel. The interior has a set of race buckets, otherwise thats all original. Also has aluminum wheels. What would be my best bang for the buck to reduce weight. I'd like to lose about 300 lbs on it over the winter. Thanks for any input, Clint

300lbs should lighten your wallet a good bit. I'd say race weight glass hood, lightweight brakes, aluminum heads and lighter front suspension (tube k or chopped up stocker)

wow, that seems heavy...last time I was at the track, the scales weren't up....but my car alone was ~3200# last time I weighed it, full bench seat interior, AAR bolt on hood, rest is steel.
Aluminum rad
aluminum manual steering box
aluminum master cylinder
denso alternator (lighter and better)
mini starter
not sure how much you want to "hack" it up
remove heater
remove radio/speaker
scrape black seam sealer off floors
glass fenders/hood
remove back seat/carpet
I always wanted to replace my pot metal front fender caps with the fiberglass ones used on some factory cars...why someone doesn't repop these in fiberglass...I don't know
http://www.hotrod.com/howto/113_0310_weight_reduction/viewall.htmllet me know how you make out...I'm after some weight loss/power gain mods this winter as well

Hey Clint, watched you make a pass, and a 9.38 ET is getten down the road!
Clints Dart has a procharged 408 small block. Very nice ride, and a real sleeper when you see it pull to the line.
The back seat and brakes are about all I would do. If you do remove the back seats you could take the window crank mechanisms out and use a solid strut to hold the glass up. Same with the passenger window, but I would leave the drivers window stock. If you run Caltracs, there must be a lot of weight there. Ladder bars are light. Spendy, but also a suspension upgrade. They may be a bit harsh for the street if you street drive it though. Someone should chime in with the weight difference, I don't know how much there is.

Hi Clint. Hope to see it run at Muscle car shootout! Sounds like its going to be a screamer!
I would leave it in street trim. Looks so nice right now. I have been gutting mine out a bit.

I guess I did something right. My 73 duster weighs 3200lbs without me in it. It's a all iron 440, full interior, fold down rear seat and all other factory metal except the hood which is a heavy weight AAR fiberglass piece.

The scales might be off, but they were running super gas, super comp., and stockers that weekend. If the scales were off I'd think that they would have caught it???? There's alot of added weight with a procharger, i/c, and meth injection with the tank.

I will b running at muscle car. Hopefully we will see you there. I really wouldnt be to worried about your weight. That setup seems to be making plenty of steam. Or maybe you are going for the 7.50 cert cage? lol! Maybe a couple sand bags in the trunk??? Real bias slicks?

72 Swingers are probably not comparable, but mine weighs 3610 with me in it. Small block, aluminum heads and radiator, 727, 6 point rollbar, plastic fuel cell, bench seats, factory column shifter, factory glass and regulators, no heater box, no fiberglass, 3 1/2" exhaust to the back bumper, convo pros, mini tubbed, procharger, intercooler, factory disc brakes, 8 3/4 rear...

Well I put discs all the way around on my car last week, way lighter and stops way better. I used Wilwoods Pro Street kits front and back. I weighed stuff on a bathroom scale, not super accurate but gives me a rough idea.
Front brakes saved 44 lbs
rear brakes saved 12 lbs
pulled heater core and blower motor 15 lbs
total 71 lbs
Went and weighed it at the track Friday morning and they said it was 3555
What the....Before I did the brakes it was 3550,
