MP 528 crate Hemi block coolant blockage?

MP 528 crate Hemi block coolant blockage? - 08/14/12 04:34 AM

Wondering if anyone else has 528 MP crate hemi cooling issues due to excessive casting crap in the water jackets right behind the water pump ports. A buddy couldn't get his 528 to run cool until Barton's mentioned seeing this problem a couple of times. Sure enough that was the problem with his and I'm checking mine as well since my 528 gets hot real quick as well despite new big rad, etc.

here are some pics inside the lower waterpump block ports of the 528 MP crate and inside the same lower waterpump holes in a 66 cast 426. Guess I know why the 528 gets hot so quick. Now what do i do?

here's 426 lower rh waterport. you can clearly see the cylinders and far into the block. on the 528 you really can't see past the slag...any ideas how to deal with the 528 would be greatly appreciated

You can clean it up with a deburring tool. Just be careful not to hit a cylinder or any machined surfaces

Are you the original buyer of the engine and how long ago ?

I bought it new in march 09. it has @ 5 miles on it, it's one built @ Bartons shop for Mopar Performance. thanks for the pointers folks, much appreciated.

Mopar banks on this, buy it and get it running long after the 90 day warranty expires.

Barton should be checking for this when he is assembling them and rejecting, or fixing, the blocks before he assembles them. It should have gotten real hot during the dyno seesions one would think and given him a heads up ???

You might try to see what Mopar will do for you if you can't clear it, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

I sure never thought to check it and I'm thinking it wouldn't have got hot enough on the dyno @ Ray's for the problem to reveal itself...motor would've been warmed up, done it's pull, and shutdown...attention to detail on this MP/barton built 528 is impressive. Block manufacturer is the one laying down here IMHO.

I guess the next question is what is HOT and is your cooling system up to the task ? 5 miles isn't much to gauge the extent of the issue .

Barton can be hit or miss a friend had him do an engine , had to take it back twice.

When I opened this I thought this would be the issue with the hole running into the deck from the WP not being machined all the way through, which only the earliest blocks had. Should have been cleaned up by '09 though.

You didn't need to know that, but I just wanted to be honest because I am very familiar with that issue/seen it a bunch of times, but I've never seen quite that much casting flash in the lower holes

I'm with Scott, and I would want to clean that up but proceed with extreme caution.

Are these the world blocks? Will the siamese casting make problems?
Thanks!

Why has this issue been hushed up? Did world step up and take responsibility or their defective castings? Enquiring minds wan to know... TBF

I had it in my world siamese block, fixed in about 5 minutes. 4 of those was finding a hole saw to clean up the port. Tim
