spray bar oiling

spray bar oiling - 11/07/08 08:49 PM

I have a KB block that is not drilled for pushrod oiling and going to T@D individual rocker arms. Need more info on spraybar systems.

Who does it ,

What worked, what did not work ,

Some pictures would be appreciated

Hello,

Spray bar oiling is a system that was intended for cooling of the springs. It was not intended for primary oiling of the rockers. Don't expect it to work as a primary means of rocker oiling if you have high pressures.

Sure it will, and has done just that for years.
It just needs to be setup properly. Adjusters what are hollow, which allows oil to enter the cup. I prefer Cup adjusters, and ball/ball end pushrods. Many people with these rockers, have had zero problems with this setup. My self included..I ran The Jesel setup, and made my own Oiling spray bars, out of brake line etc. Ran it for years without trouble.

Use spray bars with Jesel on Indy440-1 heads with zero problems.

Spray bars are the only way to go on HP engines. We have used them on our 620", 588" B1 and Indy engines with not 1 problem. We have spring pressures at 300 lbs and never have had a spring/ valvetrain failure.

The first time I tried it I smoked the pushrods. Evidently the Indy spraybar valve covers have restrictors in them that are supposed to be removed for break in. There aren't any instructions in the box with the covers though so I guess it is just something people are supposed to know somehow? The next motor I went with pushrod oiling.

Spray bar oiling with both T&D and Jesel with no issues. I have a .060 restricter in the Valve covers.

Spray bars here since 2000, street and strip. I have had valve spring issues but it was due to incorrect installed height and spring prep not an oiling problem.

Just thought i bring this back up , was looking @ the pic andyf put up with the burnt intake pushrod lookin the worst.

Was checking these spray bars with the valve cover tops cut off , seems the intake push rods on cylinder #s 2 & 7 don't get any oil off the spray bars , just seems to spray into the lifter valley , if these spray bars are drilled using the same template then Indy want to look into it , as all the spray bar holes must be out of whack on each pair they sell.

Have you all got lucky so far? , why break em in without the resrictor , as there should be enough oil with the restrictor in place. Maybe you could flood the top end with oil on initial break in with restrictors in place , or are the intake pushrods (#2/7)borderline on lubrication throughout the life of the motor.

I don't think they're designed to inject oil onto the push rods. I think most of the oiling is splash fed from the oil supplied by the spray bars. On mine it seemed to drop onto the rocker arms more than anything else.
We've used them since August 2000, We used to do about 120 passes a year 'til 2006, probably getting on for a 900 passes and we haven't had a problem yet with smoked pushrods. Plus we've restricted them more than when they came from Indy. Lucky? maybe

Was gonna drill em in the right place , but the hole sizes are no more than a hairs thickness , busted 5 drill bits already.

Hey Tig , might see you on 'Sands lounge' (10s68)

Predator T&D rockers right?

the holes are there for a reason. might as well utilize them
I sent my block to be machined and bushed for pushrod oiling

Now that's an intake port!

Same as yours but got no oil hole in my rockers , although i did put a thread up asking if i should drill the rockers out to help oiling.

spray bars do work great if they're pointed in the right spots, and they don't get clogged for what ever reason, but it's hard to beat pushrod oiling if it's an option. I think the only advantage sprayers have is that you can source the oil before it goes through the motor, so it'll have lower contact temp than pushrod oil.
