Comp XE295HL with beehives? - 07/31/12 05:09 PM

Looking at using the Comp XE295HL in a '499 lowdeck with Victor heads w/ 1.6:1 rockers. Just looking at the #'s, it seems I can pull more mass out of the valvetrain by using beehive springs than by using Comps toolsteel retainers with conventional springs. The PAC 1518 seems to be suitable with this cam, if a bit light on open pressure, compared to the recommended Comp 924-16 spring. Anyone done this before? S/F....Ken M

Haven't done it but it sounds reasonable to me. Two factors in your favor: 1. less weight; 2. beehives have much better resonance characteristics.

It is way better to have more seat and opended pressures to start with than a little bit to little, especailly on solid roller cams EDITED OOPs, that is the same cam I put in my 464 pump six pak motor, not a solid roller cam as I misread I set mine up at 160 lbs on the seats and around 365 to 375 lbs opened with i.6 rockers It runs good, dyno time and one year in the car racing and street driving , under 1500 miles total

The July 2010 issue of Popular Hot Rodding they build a killer 505 using the XR292HR-10 cam and 26120-16 beehives with 1.6 ratio rockers. You might want to find a copy. (Ask me why I know this edition )615hp and 611tq
