Who should build my transmission?

Posted By: crazytrain

Who should build my transmission? - 07/27/12 03:20 AM

I have a 4500 lb 75 coronet wagon with a 489ci stroker motor making around 650-675hp. I am running a 31" tall tire with 4.30 gears. Iwant to over build it, since I have a few upgrades in the works, so I would nlike it to handle at least 800hp. I had an insedent at Quarter aces for the Chryslers at Carlisle nationals and ended up with a broken trans, bent driveshaft, dented mufflers(who needs them anyway, and bolts sheared off the rearend pinion yoke. So, I am starting the repairs by trying to get a really good and strong trans, any suggestions, or help you guys can give me would be great. Thanks.

I have talked to CRT and I am leaning towards them, but I was looking to see if there might be somebody i missed, or if there were good or bad things about CRT. Thanks for the input.

Stop leaning and just let CRT build it. You won't be sorry.

Jim Rickman in Story City , Iowa. He does my 727 and I beat the crap out of it. Never had a problem.

CRT will never get a dime from me--the guy was very rude to me when I asked a simple question in a pm . Lost my $$$$ .

John Cope has come thru for me when I have had issues and called him directly.... always picked up the phone and has "walked" me thru trouble shooting whatever was going on. Plus, I have bought several items thru him in the recent past and never had any concerns at all. Hands down, an excellent guy to deal with and someone to rely on.

CRT. Have them build it, you won't save much building it yourself, and CRT gives you a free trans freshen up.
I built my trans pretty much like the Pro Trans II Reverse manual shift, with additional options like the Thick lug pump, ultra sprag, and billet front servo. By the time I paid for all the additional parts and shipping, it cost almost the same.

CRT is good, John has been a great resource everytime I've called.
ProTrans, reputation speaks for itself, their transmissions are in about every serious Stock and super stocker in the country.
Tranzact is what I have in my car, no complaints. Joe has been helpful whenever I called with questions.

Or build your own, you wont save much if any money, but you will have a much better handle on how it all works.

Call "Big John" at CRT, tell him all information he will need on your combo. He will set you up with what you need and you will be satisfied. His number is 219-374-0100...drop the dime and get it rolling!

I have several of his trans, I've used them for years and no failure yet Knock on wood They build the best and latest state of the art trick race and street and strip trans John at CRT is probally very good, just like Lupo, any of the good guys should be able to build you a good piece I would buy a low low gear set and a billet drum also for your application along with a pinion yoke that uses U bolts instead of regular bolts and straps

CRT!

I live in California and still use John. I tried closer trans shops, but had many issues. It costs me more to use CRT since I have to ship, but it's worth it.

Thanks for all the great advice guys, i think I will go with CRT. But as far as building one on my own, I have the book, and a spare trans, Just not the time right now to do it, and do it right, so I will build the spare myself as a back up.I cant wait to get this thing back on the track and see what it can really do once tuned in. Thanks again guys.

Cab Burge, thanks, I was planning on the Low Low gear set. Who is a good supplier of the u-bolt style pinion yokes?

This is the same way I looked a it. I bought the book, and had the trans already. It did seem that there are some specialty tools required, to build one, and I didn't want to learn from my mistakes on this transmission, as I have on most everything else. I called John @ CRT and we went over what I needed. I went with the billet steel front drum, RMVP, and Ultimate Sprag as safety features. He shipped it on time as he promised.
Great guy to deal with.

I just want to comment on building it yourself.
when you start changing the gears and drums you may need different thickness snap rings, clutch steels, and thrust washers too. Getting all the clearances right can add to the time and expense of rebuilding the transmission if you don't have the different thickness parts on hand.

Thanks again everyone, you have been very helpful with this choice, I will be placing my order from CRT Tomorrow morning. 451mopar, thanks for the tip, I appreciate it.

That is the main reason I quit building my own transmissions, lack of proper selection of thrush washers, snap rings and the latest advice on new wear racing parts. I wouldn't pay the cheapest brain doctor or attempt to do my own brain surgery I do my own motor assembly and I set up my own rear ends, I bought the pinion depth tool from Pro Parts years ago to avoid hauling the rear ends a 100 miles each way to get them done, two trips a week after work OP, as far as the pinion yoke contact Dr DIff. about them, if he doesn't have them try Randys Ring and Pinion I bought both of them in aluminum and steel, I haven't tried the aluminum one yet Where's the chicken symbol (instant Graemlins) when I need it

Rebuilding a 40 year old transmission = brain surgery. Really?
