451 Camshaft Questian

Guy's I Am Putting Together A Low Deck 451 For Mostly Street Car, And Am Getting Ready To Decide What Camshaft That I Want. I Am Wanting Good Power But Not Something Too Terribly Rough Of An Idle. Every Body Says That With A Stroker You Can Get Away With Much More Duration, But Would That Count For A 451? Isn't It Just Basically A 440?

WAY too many variables............weight, heads,gears comp. etc. but when in doubt a good ol .480-.500 lift cam w/230-235 dur. @ .050 has always got the job done for me on mild combos.

I agree with Thumper, for the best answer we need more information. Do you have any goals for the car? HP or ET wise? What is the rest of the combination?

Well basically you have a 440 with a bit shorter intake runners. It isn't a stroker except compared to a 383/400. So anything that would work for a 440 will work for your 451.

I'd say the Lunati Voodoo cam in the middle of the series would be about right. Something like the Comp XE268.

there are some variables here but the big one is; do you want to drive the car a bunch? i've got a 440 in my 65 coronet, good heads, 6-pak, torqueflite, 3.23 rear, 9.3:1 compression. it has an engle k65 solid; 238@.050-.510 lift. it's all the cam i want. it's got a little rumble, would probably have a little more "pop" with 10 or 10.5 compression. doesn't need much converter. low maintenance, easy break-in, and makes enough power for my old butt.

Do you care if it is solid or hydraulic ? Or flat tappet or roller ? Ron

The Mopar .528 solid works really well in that size of engine. It has a fairly smooth idle but it will pull hard up past 6000 rpm.
