best stuff to spray machined crank? - 06/30/12 04:56 PM

My crank is back from machining. And I probably won't get to assembly for a month or two. What is the best stuff to coat the crank to prevent any rusting? Wd40? Motor oil? Thanks

WD40 works for a while, but in high Nebraska humidity Cosmoline is the best thing.

Ive tried WD40 only to have a crank need polished again before assy. Seems like ya have to respray it several times in a month.

Cosmoline coats and stays.

OH, yes csmoline is spendy, but the machine shop who cut your crank should have some laying around and for a small fee might put some on for ya.

Only a month or two????

Frankly the oil residue left behind from the crank shop will probably keep it well protected if its stored in a temperature stable environment. If it really worries you, you can just put a thin coat of assembly lube on the journals..

Keeping it bagged after spraying/coating it with the oil of your choice will help. I've stored bagged stuff like that indoors (heated shop) for years with no corrosion.

Not a fan of WD-40. The carrier evaporates over time and leaves a hard to remove film on the surface. I have found that water displacing silicon spray works well.

Ive used Boeshield T 9. Reportedly made by Boeing for parts after machining.

No matter what lubricant you use, bagging it keeps moisture out and keeps the crank clean. Kept cranks this way for years and no corrosion. If you can't or don't want to store it vertically, buy a hole saw the diameter of the main journal, a 1x6 and create a cradle with three supports and the crank will store on a shelf or under a workbench, etc.

not wd40 ! white lube in the aerosol can will do a good job as a lube and keep air and moisture away from the metal.
