New engines dont have them... they were used back
in the day to help cover up IFFY seals... plus run
a 100K miles... I havent used one in years with the
better quality seals now days

Will some please make this question a sticky once and for all?
Along with "What is the best rear main seal?" and
"Where can I find a BB oil pump gasket?"....

Why the negative vibes?? If you don't like a thread, don't look at it...Sure...A lot of questions are asked over and over...And not everyone catches them. Get over it already!!

All anybody needs to do is send me a PM for the answers to all three questions

BTW Randy, I've never used a slinger in any of mine
the seal is more than adequate

No slinger here either. If it's main purpose is to prevent leaks from lousy seals, slinger is a misleading name because that makes it sound like its job is to distribute oil.

If it was called a blockade, and many people dont use it but aren't leaking oil out the front, it would be more obvious that it's not needed

I wondered the same thing when I did my old motor. I bought one and was told it wasn't necessary. I had no problems with leaks.

Yeah the term is misleading... never could see how
it would sling oil up onto the chain... you would think
it would have had some sort of paddles at the ends
to throw oil around

Its job was to sling oil OFF the crank snout. Using a slinger with a Neoprene seal can lead to a grooved damper hub. You want some oil on one side of the seal to lube it.

Looks like the "Slinger" stays in the parts drawer in the future! Thanks guys! Randy

I strongly suggest you get over it and think twice before flapping your pie hole.
No negative vibes were intended in that comment.
It was a legitimate request to the mods because a certain few questions do get asked so often.
