There have been crazier combo's built that run well on the street, and lay down startling numbers at the strip. Just look at the Pro Street cars that run in Drag Week. So, to answer your question, yes it is possible. I have to ask you, why the hell would you build such a heavy tube chassis car? To add that much weight, it kind of defeats the purpose of building a tube chassis car. What is your ET goal?

What sort of ET would you be looking for on the track...
makes a big difference on the engine....I'm sure
you mean lighter than what you posted

I'm finishing up a Dodge Rampage with a moly chassis,
SB 416, 518 OD trans with 5000 stall and a 9" rear
with 4.10 gears and 295/55 tires on the back... pretty
much stock interior.. with all glass working windows
except for the back glass which is lexan because of
the bars going to the back... I expect this to weigh
2800 with me in it.... I dont want A/C... too hard
to work around.. but I expect it can run 9.70s or
so but I just want a 10.0 to 10.2 car so I dont need
to cert it and wont need a NHRA license

again not sure of weight when done-hoping around 3400 when all done-using as much fiberglass as possible-both frt fenders, hood, frt bumper,scoop-all tied together so can lift off as 1 full part or remove hood and scoop along.doors are gutted, stock door panels, back seat.dont want to be pooch as in 11.00s but still would hope for 10s
somewhere.the intent is to make as unique as possible but still have fun and even power tour it-if it got 10 mpg w/16 gal cell could get almost to indy from home here near st.louis.fun without embarrassment is goal.thanks to all so far for comments.rick

The car I mention above is being built for drag week
and maybe power tour stuff... I will say you should
look into a OD trans... for me the 518 worked out well
being a SB...it bolts right up... I built a 18 gal
fuel tank for cruising... the 4.10 gears for the track
and still have OD for the road... I decided against
going E-85 for this car due to it can be a pain to find
at times

Re: mild mannered/dual purpose 540-does it exist? - 05/07/12 06:45 AM

Is this going to be a 4.500 bore with a 4.375 stroke or the oher way around with the stroke being 4.500 with a 4.375 bore? It makes a difference on the cam lobes and LSA Also what type of lifter do you want to use, solid flat tappet, hydraulic flat tappet, solid roller or hydraulic roller?

That's what I was thinking. If you want your cake and eat it too, boost is the only way to go.
