rb external oil pump ?'s

rb external oil pump ?'s - 04/22/12 05:51 AM

i decided it would be a good idea to replace my oil pump gaskets since its off and i have the chance to. I have a melodeon dual line swinging pickup, that i converted the top to a muscle motors screw on filter part.

Its a mild 540, do i need to run dual lines? can i plug one at the pickup? I ask because the threads to the pickup hose on the sandwich plate between the actual oil pump and the block are damaged.

I can't seem to find just the plate online, and think in my application a single external pickup is beyond overkill as compared to the stock style. I don't plan on seeing over 6500 rpms ever!

anyone either know where to buy the plate, or know if i can just dump it? Ialso have the longer distributor drive gear, if i get rid of the plate will i have to buy the regular length one?

I'm sure Milidon will sell that part seperate, call them Monday morning and get the part number and then call your favorite speed parts suppleir to buy it, why change it for that piece If you remove it and block off one of the pickup lines on the pickup in the oil pan you will need a new oil pump drive also

Keep the two lines

I'm pretty sure Milodon lists that plate separately.

I have the Milodon single external line setup (static p/u, regular deep center sump pan) on my hemi. Been running it since 2006 and turning 7200 rpm w/ no issues whatsoever.

Re: rb external oil pump ?'s - 04/24/12 05:28 PM

that is the dual line spacer that is to be used with a stock pump. it goes between the block and the pump and has the threaded fitting for the pickup, i assume that is what you're looking for

Re: rb external oil pump ?'s - 04/24/12 05:31 PM

i bought mine second hand.... so i don't know what any of it was called o have any part numbers.
But yes, it is the spacer between the oil pump and the block with a threaded fitting for the oil pickup.

This is the part you want: 21350

yup, same part for single or dual pickup?

Re: rb external oil pump ?'s - 04/24/12 06:43 PM

yup...For a single line, you can use the plate or Milodon cover(rear exit hole).

Re: rb external oil pump ?'s - 04/24/12 06:50 PM

so can i just plug the hole for the swinging pickup and cap the inlet for the plate? run it that way?
Money for this wasn't an issue until I lost most it in Vegas at MATS But seriously gambling didn't do my car any favors.... i just WANT to get it going right now, if i cap it, now next month when I get caught up financially i can replace the plate...

Re: rb external oil pump ?'s - 04/24/12 07:05 PM

yup.. I would remove the line and cap each end. There are different suppliers for AN12 caps.

This is where I buy a lot of my fittings from..

Re: rb external oil pump ?'s - 04/24/12 07:07 PM

um...forgive me for asking the stupid question but if the threads are damaged enough that they can't be used for a hose fitting how are you going to cap it?

Re: rb external oil pump ?'s - 04/24/12 07:09 PM

remove the plate if it's really bad.Without knowing how bad the threads are we can only guess... It may only need a little dressing with a small file.

Re: rb external oil pump ?'s - 04/24/12 07:13 PM

that is what i was thinking he was doing, if it's removed a shorter pump drive should be used

I have 2 questions while we have some knowledgeable people talking oil pumps?
1.- What does everyone think about the new design milodon pump,Good or Bad?
2.- I am thinking of maybe using the milodon part # 21815, Good or Bad choice?

Re: rb external oil pump ?'s - 04/24/12 11:54 PM

i've no experience with the new pump but afaik it's the same as their original external entry pump but is designed for using the internal feed and is anodized billet aluminum. they've also introduced a new line of one piece billet covers to alive the problem the original ones had with the gasket blowing out.

as for the PN you listed i'm "assuming" you meant the 21815 which is their original external feed pump. i have used them with zero problems although others have had problems loosing prime.

Re: rb external oil pump ?'s - 04/25/12 12:38 AM

The 21815 (left out the 1 the 1st time)pump has the dual inlet doing away with the need for the plate between the pump and block, also it looks like the vane and rotor are different from the older ones. My milodon from a few years back had the plate between the pump and block for the 2nd line.

Re: rb external oil pump ?'s - 04/25/12 12:47 AM

I have 2 21815 pumps on 2 engines. 1 is brand new for my B1. I bought it because the 520 in my dart worked good with the first one and no issues. I am trying their new smaller cover this time tho, for the first time. I run a remote oil filter to. The new cover gave me a little more room in front of my rack n pinion. The 21815 takes it's own length bronze distributor drive.

3. Length of distributor drive shaft should always be checked to be sure that shaft is not bottoming out
in gear causing this gear to dig into and ruin the pump cover. A minimum of .060" shaft end clearance
is required. Shaft should be shortened if neccessary. The Milodon #21513 and #21523 pump shafts
are required by the 21815 pump equipped engines. When a steel bodied high volume pump is used,
the 21505 and 21525 pump shaft and gears are reuired. When a steel bodied high volume pump is
used with a dual line spacer the long length pump shaft #21500 and 21520 are required.

Re: rb external oil pump ?'s - 04/25/12 12:52 AM

i believe the rotors are from a BB ford. i never really liked the spacer plate deal but many have used it. i didn't care for their cover so i hacked one up from a stock cover.

about 25% of the threads are toasted, only on one side.... so 1/4 of the round part is messed up... when i said cap I was thinking tig it shut with a plug. in my head i pictured what i wanted, in the forum i sounded stupid

my worry is leakage if i run the external pickup... if its plugged i can replace it at a later time, if i ever decide too.
