8 3/4 stock axles question - 03/30/12 01:47 AM

I had a customer bring in some 8 3/4 rear end he wants me to swap gears and Sure Grips etc. No problem there. He also brought his axles so I can press on some new Green bearings. All set there. he also brought some Moroso 3" axle studs to install. Problem is, they dont fit. I dont ever do stock axle stuff, so maybe there is an explanation someone can provide. The Moroso stud ( knurl) diamtere is about .680 . The axle holes are about .640 . Is this common, and is there a replacement stud that fits, or will I have to simply bore out the axles? I know its an easy fix, but just looking to see if there is a drop in stud available to save this guy some labor time.To do it right I'd bore them or ream them, so its not just a quick drill.

Sent Dr Diff an email but didnt hear back, so hoping someone here may know.
FYI, these axles are off a 65 Coronet, 413 4 speed car. Didnt know if they maybe had two different axles over time. Thanks.

I dont know the actual dimensions, but that sounds about right. The replacement studs have to be Drawn in, they are not a slip fit. So a .020 thousands knurl dimension isnt that big IMO.

When I changed even stock studs , I would install them one at a time from the back. Use a bigger bolt spacer and draw All them in with the studs bolt untill you see that they are all seated.

This post shouldnt be done, IMO.

These answers arent good enough so far.

Wrong knurl size!?? Get the correct ones! ??? These arent very helpfull explanations.

What is the correct knurl size for any given diameter.

The only long, press-in stud with the correct knurl size is a Mr Gasket product (MRG-4311).

You must enlarge the holes with a 43/64" bit to install Moroso studs.

BTW, I did not receive an E-mail from you.

Thanks Cass. I ended up just doing that anyhow, a little tight for press fit, but with CMP, it pressed in ok. He already had bought the studs, so I was trying to use what he had instead of making him buy more.

I'll check the email. I went and googled your site, then used the contact info link on there. Cant re-call the address, but I'll pull it back out of email in case something isnt working there.

Thanks.
