Today is D-Day for the new bullet!

Today is D-Day for the new bullet! - 03/23/12 09:53 AM

Looks like we will be going up on the dyno today with my new 540!!! Anyone care to take make any guesses as to what it will make? Before any of the nay-sayers start jumping in, I realize that dyno numbers should be taken with a grain of salt and that the real numbers come out at the track. Here is a brief run down of the combo:

World Mega Block- 4.500" bore
Callies 4.250" crank 2.2" rod
Callies CompStar H-Beam rods
Diamond custom pistons
Comp roller cam and lifters (duration @.050"= 274 int/280 ex 112 c/l 740" lift)
Trend pushrods- pushrod oiling
Indy -1 345CNC heads flow 370 @.700"
Jesel 1.7 rockers
Manley Nextek springs
Manley intake, Ferrea exhaust valves
Indy 440-2 intake
Holley 1150 Dominator
Hamburger oil pan
Milodon dual line swinging pick up
Compression is about 12.5:1

Thanks are owed to Shawn Meyer at St. Claire Engine in Richmond, Mi. for his engine building talent and patience with me and all of my stupid questions.
I would also like to thank HardcoreB for his help as well as Bob George for advise and parts.
I will try to post video and pictures with the results tonight or tomorrow.

Wish us luck!!!

Randy

Comp roller cam and lifters (specs later)

Guess later...
What size headers were used on the dyno? (dia and length)

But that should make some good power.
What the moderate compression ratio gives up, the large CID should compensate, and with the right converter won't kill the drag strip performance. But I would have liked to see more CR.

Why did you pick that CR?
EDIT: After seeing the cam and 2" headers, it should make just over 800 hp. The heads might be worth a touch more.

Make sure the headers fir the exhaust ports Mine didn't and the motor would start to miss above 5200 RPM, same heads and headers on two different short blocks miss with those headers My 526 C.I., 4.380 bore x 4.375 stroke, motor with similar compression made 845 HP at 7000 RPM missing on a DTS dyno at 4300 Ft above sea level Yours should make more

Just curious if you bushed the lifter bores, did you restrict oiling anywhere? Doing a similar build myself.

I'm going to say around 840hp.

Good luck!

The last 540 Wedge that we built and dynoed made 813HP. That was with a similar combo except it was a NSS/Max Wedge class engine using the Indy crossram and dual Edelbrock carbs. I believe that your combo
should make 850+ because of the better intake and carb combo. My customer ran a 9.68 with that combo in 3400 pound B-body. After 3 seasons of racing we freshened that engine, bored to 4.530, did our hand valve job and changed nothing else in the engine. The result was a best run of 9.48. We are estimating that engine at 830HP now. Hope this gives you a good idea of what you should expect.

Randy called me this afternoon to see if I had a
balancer... they had problems with his.... I did
have one but Sean found a ATI one over in the shop...
so they were running late

First off, I would like to thank everyone for their interest and well wishes! Holy smokes, I don't know where to start. It was one heck of a day.
We started making some initial pulls to get a base line only to find out that the only part I re-used from my old motor was bad. I had a Summit SFI balancer that only had about 50 passes or so on it and when Shawn checked the timing he found that the ring had slipped a whole bunch. Sean (HardcoreB) ran home and grabbed the one for his build (thanks a bunch) while we pulled mine.
I had bought a factory reconditioned 1150HP Dominator and we just couldn't get the fuel curve to come in after jet and air bleed changes. Sean to the rescue again! He had an older modified Dominator of unknown origin that we swapped .
Second pull with that carb and and our last drops of fuel netted us the best numbers of the day. 830 h.p. @6700 rpm and 775 ft. lbs. of torque @5500 rpm! This is right where Shawn said it would be. I will try to post some pics and video later today.

But I would have liked to see more CR.

Why did you pick that CR?

They were a 2" primary with varying lengths (from 30-37") but they have proven themselves to make good power on many other engines. They were built to fit a "B" body so, they had some packaging compromises. I suggested he put even LESS CR in it. (11.5) It would have made 800 HP even then. I was nicely impressed, the engine made a little more power than I expected. And there was I'd guess 20HP more to be had on dyno with some PCV and playing with oil system. But the key is it is sorted out now and ready for his car. But the car may not be ready for the new engine.

Thanks for the kind words Guys! This whole project has been pretty exciting for me and has exceeded my expectations. Like Sean mentioned, the car is not quite ready for the new power. Hopefully we can upgrade to a cage (from 8 point bar) and put some wheelie bars on it until I learn to drive, lol!

Re: Today is D-Day for the new bullet! - 03/25/12 03:34 AM

Well, you have to be happy with those results!
It made more than I expected with the 2" headers on 540 CID. A stepped header 2" to 2-1/8 (or mod the existing) would be a nice improvement, IMO.

Very good results.

Wish I could have been there for the dyno session...instead of partying out on my friend's dock, down in Sebring! Thanks for the invite,Randy!....you KNOW I would have enjoyed being there with you guys! 830hp..and 775tq is VERY IMPRESSIVE...for a "little ole" 540! I would think once the combo's all sorted out,and the suspension is dialed in...low 9's would be attainable! These results put a BIG smile on my face! Not only for your success...but,knowing Shawn is doing the the machine work on my 440! I can rest assured that I'm in GOOD hands!
