Advice on buying a 727 race trans. - 03/22/12 08:35 PM
Have a friend wanting to buy a new race transmission with a lower first gear. He is running a 3400lb 68 B-Body with a 499cid and a dana 60 with 4:10 gears. Currently foot braking.
Looking for any advice on who to buy one from such as ATI, A&A, or whoever else?

I guess someone forgot to tell all those funny car racers back in the late sixties/early seventies with their blown nitro motors hooked to torqueflite trannies that that's not going to work!

That lil shop on the west coast isn't too bad: Pro Trans in Lancaster. Dave has been known to build some pretty nice torqueflights.
North Central: Lofgren Auto Specialties in Minnesota, chuck originally built the trans that is in my race car. I had it updated/freshened by Dave at Pro Trans a few years back
Central US: by all means....John Cope is a very proven vendor and races what he builds.... actually all three of the guys I mentioned race their own Mopars!

I don't think that application needs a 1st gear lower than the stock 2.45 (TF). My advice is to get a list of the new parts that will be used, and compare the total price to that list.
ie
steel or aluminum front drum
billet rear servo
type of clutches and steels
planetaries
sun shell
valve body
deep pan (type)
etc.

your right it does look like a promod car.....but i have seen it run.....in person......and it doesnt run like promod car......... Its a chassis car with a blower...... barely runs 4s
Mine has a t-400 in it....... it would have a lenco if I could run one in any class, but they wont allow them.....
Do you need an extra lenco, I think we have 4-5 in stock

Cool I didn't know it was only in the hi fours. Could have swore he said 3.90s but no big deal.
Did you take the turbo off lately? Seems like earlier this month when I seen it, it was still on.
No I don't need a spare lenco, thats why I chose a lenco. Put it in and forget about it.
Hope my tranzact 727 is as good as my home built unit. That one had to many runs to count.

good to know there is some good builders of 727TF's out there.
But without hi-jacking the thread. anyone have a spare 4spd liberty laying around? class does not allow 5 speeds.

I have seen numbers posted in National Dragster and other publications that Joe from Tranzact had ran all through the 4's in the eighth. If you want to consider 4.40 and slower all through the 4's.
I don't think these publications would lie Josh.
Joe may have told you he ran 3's or was capable. Maybe but I would not repeat it until I saw or heard it from something reputable.
Joe makes a great valve body. I was very happy with the one I had. But, as far as special builders and such go. That is pure BS. My tranny had a tranzact vb, an oled worn out Turbo Action alluminum drum, A&A deisel truck planetary and aftermarket output.
People buy aftermarket input shafts only to break the drive plate. They cause themselves more greif buying stuff they don't need IMO. Stock rabestus clutches work fine also.

I'm not going say anything else about a three sec slip. I could have misunderstood. I will say Joe is a class act in the way I was treated
I will go back to the garage now }:)

Absolutely JOHN COPE... I had a problem with the convertor and he stood behind his product.. I explained to him that it wasn't anything HE DID,,, but the convertor builder NOT reading the .070 midplate BUILD SHEET that I SPECIFIED for the build,,,,, He WENT OUT OF HIS WAY to MAKE SURE I was a happy camper.. That's what I CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE !!!! Usually,, you get the "no warranty" because it's race stuff,, but JOHN COPE stood BEHIND his product 100% even though it wasn't his product that was the issue !!!! GREAT GUY JOHN COPE !!!
