How do I find out where my convertor "flashes" at???

How do I find out where my convertor "flashes" at??? - 03/19/12 08:18 PM

I have a 73 Challenger with a 4.500 X 4.500 wedge engine.. 572 CUBIC INCH with Indy 440-1 heads ( cnc325).. MY 60 FOOTS ARE AROUND 1.57 and it launches like there's something wrong with it.. the Trans is NOT SLIPPING ( I think) and the convertor is one of those ALABAMA convertor company's $1000.00 dollar convertor... SPECIALLY MADE for my setup... Could someone PLEASE explain the "flashes" theory and also explain the " formula" for finding out which convertor to use???? I DO HAVE a DYNO SHEET for the engine...
Thanks in Advance,, Gary Oles nosboyracing

Several ways are used, one is to put the tranny in high gear, manual shift valve body, and roll it along in high gear at or close to 1500 RPM, smash the throttle while watching the tach, the RPM the motors revvs up to is the flash RPM. I have a playback tach and it shows my 8 inch race converter to flash to 5200 in low gear, it will flash higher in high gear when I test it You can also test it in low gear by foot stalling it and then wacking the throttle while watching the tach, I'm more concerned on the low gear results and the RPM drop between gears when shifting than what it will flash in high gear BTW, my 518 C.I. pump gas motor in a 3450 Lb Duster with ET street tires runs 1.43 sixty foots on a good track Check your shifter cable adjustment I have seen that problem slow a lot of cars down, there slugs when the shifters are not adjusted correctly

with everything warmed up, put it in high gear, watch the tach, and slam the gas as if launching (hold the brakes). the rpm should spike a couple of hundred rpm above stall (that's flash), and then almost immediately settle down to stall speed. the whole test should be done in just a couple of seconds. did your convertor supplier get the dyno sheet when building the convertor?

Re: How do I find out where my convertor "flashes" at??? - 03/19/12 09:15 PM

as far as the dyno sheet.. I filled out the build sheet and gave him the specs BEFORE the motor was finished and ran on the dyno.. so,, NO,, he never saw the dyno sheet.. but.. he did know the cam, heads, pistons, etc,etc etc...I was told by the builder to have a convertor around 500rpm HIGHER than "flash"... I have another convertor that my friend will give me to "use" to see what his convertor does,, but,, I THINK I NEED to send the DYNOP SHEETS to someone who builds convertors that knows what he is doing.... The guy in Alabama didn't take into consideration that I had a mid plate EVEN THOUGH I told him in the BUILD SHEET !!! The convertor "SNOUT didn't fit properly into the "register" of the crankshaft and I went as far as CALLIES ENGINEERING to prove the crank register was in the right place... I spaced the flex plate out .070 to take up for the thickness of the midplate and the convertor would have NEVER FIT if I didn't do that.. it would NOT sit flat against the flex plate because it was MADE WRONG from the start.. PISSED OFF at the convertor Manufacturer.. and I TOLD the builder that also !!!
The builder was MORE THAN HELPFUL and was willing to replace the convertor and have the convertor builder eat it,, but,, I didn't want to make a SCENE because the thing DID FIT with the .070 spacer on the crank to flexplate.. It was a FLIPPING NIGHTMARE.. !!! The convertor guy SUCKS..!!!

I don't know of anyone going fast with an Alabama torque converter. I learned my lesson. I have a Hughes that will slow any car down. Choose your company wisely.

I agree that you need to call Lenny too. He will get you what you need and it will WORK.

That Alabama deal sounds like a company that I got screwed over by a few years ago- GER in PA.

Anyone on the board remember them?

I ran A GER A few years ago that I bought off ebay. It worked great but the part that slipped into the seal was to small or no prefectly round and I couldnt keep A front seal in it. I went through about 4 or 5 seals befor I figured out it was the converter. Now am running A Coan 8" and seems to be working really good with a 1.49 60' off the foot brake.

ATI,
ask Fletcher or Biondo,
you will be starting with a new update core not a 40+ year old core

Yea a friand has one he got a sweetheart deal on and could not pass up. He hasn't had any problems, but I had nothing but nightmares, then I also heard a lot of good things about PTC and almost bought one. And it seems this person is having a bad time with them.

Yes they race chevy's
but I would think consistency/ lack of problems and wins/loses might be worth something
then again those guys are just lucky

I would bet mooney that more races have been won with other brands of converters than have been with ATI There are a lot of good converter companys out there Just because a racer runs the decal and takes the contingency money doesn't guarentee that there using that product in there race cars Have you heard of Munsinger? He customizes a lot of Stock, SS and Comp Eliminator racers converters other than his own So do a lot of other converter guru and companys
