XE285HL cam, can you use stock rockers?

XE285HL cam, can you use stock rockers? - 03/16/12 05:52 PM

I am looking at this cam and wondered if it can be used with MP stock style rockers,
I have a stock 69 440 with the stock pistons down about .060 in the block and stock Eddy alum heads.

in the link below they put one in a stock 383 and used stock rockers so I think it would work in a 440 as well???

what do you guys think?

I wouldn't use stock rockers I have one of those cams in a motor I built and used for dyno testing, I used a set of 1.6 ductile iron rockers that RAS bushed, changed and corrected the ratio on, that motor worked real well with those parts on it I'm sure you can't control the lifter preload accurately with sloppy stock rockers and pushrods

ron, is this for the race truck ? are you going to deck the block or shave the heads to up the compression to around the recommended 10-1 ?

Nothing on the cam , but I know small block stock rockers don't respond well to higher spring pressure.
I can't see big block being a whole lot better.
I punched a push rod through mine with a .480 valve lift hydraulic.....I don't know what the spring pressures were because the car came with this set up , but it didn't have a lot of miles on the rebuild.
I'd consider upgrading here any time I went with more cam.

yes this is for the race truck, I have a 69 440 that has only 60K miles on it that was in my 63 wagon, it is in good shape and I plan to use it the way it is(no rebuild)

just put the eddy heads on it and a cam(I have a 509 cam but thought I would like to run this comp cam)

I would like to run it with stock rockers to keep thing simple and easy to maintain.
I have a 493 kit for a 440 that may end up in the truck

I just wanted to know if anyone is using that cam and stock MP rockers and how it works, I already have the MP rockers. Ron...

Do not see the strenghth of the rocker being a problem mock it up and see where your preload is at if its to much shim the shafts with shims from mancini if its not enough use lash caps or longer push rods.
they may not be acurate in raitio and you may have to move them around to find the best preload for each lifter but i do not feel with that cam durability is a problem check all clearances coil bind ect and go.
or spend more for a small return on your aplication.

did the same thing here on my 360 with XE268 cam and MP springs (forget which ones) after a after a couple thousand miles

went with 273 ductile rockers and have been in the clear since

The "rule of thumb" is .5" max lift with stock rockers... and that only it the spriongs are not too heavy.

You are well beyond the .5". Plus that hi po cam will want preload dialed in which is very hard to do without adjustable rockers. Plus the fast lift cam will want fairly stiff springs which will further load the rockers. That cam really needs better adjustable rockers.

years ago I ran a couple 440s with the 320 Isky cam,
that cam had 320 duration and 525 lift and I liked the fact that I could just put that cam in and run stock rockers and never had to open the valve cover up all season(I really don't like adjusting rockers).

I planed to run the 509 cam that I have with the MP stock rockers but liked the specs on Comp cams XE285HL
and when I seen that articular with the 383 they put stock rockers on with that cam and got 450HP out of it with stock heads I thought a 440 should be around or over 500HP with eddy heads.

thanks guys for the ideas and opinions, guess I will have to think about it a little more. Ron...

Hey Ron, I used the mp's on my 383 with a xe284 cam. I wasn't concerned with the strength as much as the rpm level with a hydraulic... So I used the comp promagnum lifters, which act as a solid. The deal there is you set them to .002~4 preload hot. The way I got the adjustability was by using adjustable pushrods. Speaking purely on experience, that setup has worked very well on long trips as well as many 6500rpm laps at the track, for 11 years now.
If I were building a customers engine, I would go this way without hesitation.

I think I have one set of adjustable ball and ball for stock rockers pushrods left in a box out in the shop, not sure for which engine though. PM me if anyones wants to buy them cheap. Let me know the overall length you need and I'll see if these will fit or not
