My Turn....Recommend a Cam for My Hemi & Induction - 03/11/12 02:15 PM

Pulled the trigger on a block and picked it up yestarday. Its already down at the engine builders shop, and we are mulling over ideas. I told him, whatever cam he wants goes in...Induction is my choice.

Hemi 484 Cubes +.060" and a 4.15 stroke
11.6:1 compression
426-1 heads that flow 400cfm right around .7"
31" rear tire
4.10 gear
3500lb race weight...with driver, but still streeted.
Going with oil thru the push rods this time around

Now for the tricky part. I have run a pretty nasty cam in this combo on the street and raced with it using 2100cfm bug catcher efi...Well I want to be legal for the Nostalgia series, and efi isn't allowed so the induction we have 3 choices:

-Convert the bug catcher to mechanical injection, and forget about streeting it.
-Purchase a tented top plate for my tunnel ram and run a Dominator or an SV1
-Purchase a single plane intake and run a Dominator or an SV1

Cam can be flat tappet or roller....
I am thinking somewhere around a 260 duration @.050" and .630" lift, but lets see what you guys think. Here is my old cam...

I did something close for a customer with a 65 Belvedere.
493 Hemi,4.350x4.150, 11to1 Compressiion,Stage V heads and rockers,MP crossram with original 770 Holleys and a 262 @ .050 solid roller for a street/strip car on pump gas it made 710hp @ 6500,torque curve was 580 @ 3000 to a peak of 632 @ 4700 and still has 580 @ 6500. Spring pressure is 200 on the seat and 600 over the nose with a Crower lifter with the axle and pushrod oiling.

Can you post the cam card? Sounds close to what I am looking for...Funny thing is, there was a Crower in the engine before I stroked it, and it looks like I am headed right back to it.

Here is my old one:

We were looking around the shop hoping to find it. Guess we will keep looking

I'd use that cam in a heartbeat, a New York minute

Myself I would go with at least .050 more lift...
your net lift(without and deflection) is .600 BUT
is it worth $350...... JMO

What about a crossram intake?
With that intake, I'd look for something like 264@ .050 on intake and exhaust on a 111 lca and around .680 lift if it's a 50/50 street/strip deal.
Should make 700Hp without too much trouble...

I will have to get the card from the file. If you have that Crower stick I would use it if it is in good shape. The one I used was ground by Ultradyne 262 @ .050 on int and exh, 110 lsa, intake lift ended up right at .650 I think after lash and I used a Manton 3/8 .120 wall pushrod.

My issue with the Crower when I used it before was lack of low end, but that was with stock stroke, so I am on the fence, but if I can find it down at the shop, it sounds like with the added cubes, its good to go. This motor was over +700hp, and I would like to keep what I had, but obviously, I will loose a little.

As far as cross rams go, not on a '70 Cuda...Not to mention they make less hp than a single plane. A Modman and a tented top plate I could go for...

Mr-P, your thinking another .05" lift? I will look and see what's out there.

Anyone with a link to roller lifter with push rod oiling? I know I can get AMC solid flat tappet lifters with oiling, not sure about rollers.

Just remember, I run Indy rockers, so a .630" lift cam is actually a .642" for my set-up.

yep... but then take out the lash and you get the net lift...
myself I would shoot for a .660 net lift... JMO

Not to mention the loss with aluminum rocker flex....

Exactly, what is aluminum rocker flex on a Hemi?

Just a general comment, not directed directly to you...sorry for that.
I've seen on BB's and SB's anywhere from .015 to .032 of flex depending on spring pressure. And this is just mockup!

Crower has roller lifters with the axle and pushrod oiling. Morel does also but the set I got from Morel didn't have the body skirted down far enough on one side and exposed the oil galley when it was on the nose of the cam.
