MACHINING PRICES??? - 02/29/12 09:06 PM

Could you guys give me a run down on machining prices? I need to know if a perspective shop is in the "ball park" for their work...which I've heard for years,is TOP NOTCH! Dynamic Speed & Marine..in Harrison Twp. Mi. Thanks in advance for your help!

They are great. They did my engine......in 1976 when they were on Gratiot Ave, south of 6 Mile. You know, just down the street from Mancini at that time, back when Ron and Lou actually worked the counter. There were 4 speed shops within 3 mile of one another and probably another 6 with 10 miles.

Sorry, just reminiscing.

I think Dynamic Speed & Marine is still on Jefferson, just north of Selfridge. I used them years ago. They were ok.

There's another place very close to you, Randy. St. Clair Engines in Richmond, on Armada Ridge rd. They do good work as well. One of Best Machine's past lead engine builder / machinist works there. His name is Shawn.

IMO: Price of machining is almost a non-factor. Finding a shop that does great machining is all that matters, to heck with the cost.

I use "Automotive Machine Shop" based on Art's (From Mancini Racing) recommendation.

Jack did absolutely perfect work on my stroker motor, and for the whole job it was about $1100. That included line boring the mains, boring .030 over, clearancing for a stroker crank, cleaning the block, sonic checking it, and balancing the rotating assembly for me.

Re: MACHINING PRICES??? - 03/01/12 04:02 AM

I just had a new block bored, deck height matched, line bore maines ck cam jourmal alignment ( one was off and had to hone ) hot washed the block. installed cam brgs, internally Balanced the rotating system. $1100. this machine shop is a performance shop only. Its a spotlees clean shop. when I went in yesterday he was dynoing a 1418 HP pontiac motor, yes he let me watch I spend a lot with this shop. this guy is very good. and just up the road a couple of miles.

Thanks EVERYONE! Steff, they use to be right around the corner from me for years..right near Belle River Rd.I use to stop in and BS with the owners of St.Clair Machine,Dennis...and his wife,Jill! GOOD PEOPLE! Had no clue Shawn worked for them!...heard he was real good! I'll have to give them a call tomorrow,as well as Automotive Machine,in Fraser...where Dave Dudek has had his machine work done...for years! I'm not ruling out Dynamic either! Thanks again, everyone!

X2 for SCE! Shawn is currently building my new motor. Very honest and friendly and do very good work. For a price comparison look on Automotive Machine's website. They are at the corner of Utica Rd. and Garfield in Fraser.

Re: MACHINING PRICES??? - 03/01/12 03:13 PM

here in the Chicago area, I use Midwest Engine Tech in Mokena, Illinois...very good work and build an awesome engine no matter the make...they use a CNC crank balancer ..

the last time I had work, it was 350 to balance the lower rotating assembly...may be higher now....

like said, forget about costs as long as they are within reason, when dealing with great machine shops..

I recommend Midwest Engine Tech..

I know you are on the east coast so a local guy is your best bet..

Another vote for Shawn @ St. Clair Engines...

I've used LSM in Waterford on the last three, only one of the three was my own, they've always treated me right.

Price wise they're always been on par with the other local race shops.

Stopped over to St.Clair Engines today, and met/talked to Shawn...for 20 minutes or so. REAL NICE GUY! Definately knows his Mopars,as well! My friend,Randy Johnson(Dartin)is having a stroker built by Shawn, right now!..in fact,I saw ALL of his parts..pre-assembly! Look GOOD! He STRONGLY suggested I go to Main Cap studs,at my power level. He also said that he wouldn't touch-hone my cylinders WITHOUT a torque plate..which more than a few of you said is a MUST! Thank You ALL for your suggestions on this! Can ya tell which shop I'm favoring right now?

Re: MACHINING PRICES??? - 03/03/12 07:56 PM

I've had a few engines machined by best machine and a couple assembled by them(shawn).Last summer he did a guy I know- small block stroker (st clair engines),after I installed the engine,he showed up for the break in.valve lash, basic tune.So all involved knew break-in and set up was right.Very knowlegable/capable person imo .You can go to 5 different builders/they will all have there own recipe.doesn't mean 1 is better/worse than the other. They need to stand behind there work,so they will build it the way they are comfortable with. You probably need 6 weeks or so, for the work to get done. You better get going . All the places you are considering will be ok.Go with the one you feel most comfortable with.No place is gonna have a perfect feedback.Someone is going to have a bad experience with 1 or the other. For the money invested, overbuild and be safe.saving a couple $$ here and there could bite you back.
I was happy with the work custom speed did for me years back also.

Re: MACHINING PRICES??? - 03/03/12 09:43 PM

MT,thanks for your input! I am not going with Shawn..and SCE because they're close by..or their pricing..which is close to the same as the other shops mentioned..it's Shawn's friendliness..knowledge..and referrals from people that I KNOW personally..and RESPECT,for their intelligence, and decision-making! 6 weeks??...NO BIG DEAL!..I'll still be waiting on body trim pieces,I'm sure! The X IS NOT leaving my garage until it has EVERYTHING back on it!...ESPECIALLY the engine!
