Locking out the advance ?

Locking out the advance ? - 02/21/12 02:32 AM

How many members on here are locking out the advance in there MSD distributors? I have been thinking that it would help my small block idle better with the timing higher at idle but the total timing would be the same. It idles alot better when I turn the timing up but then it is too high when it advances. It will see very little street miles.

On one of my engines I have it locked but on the other
2 it has advance.... for yours you can put in a smaller
advance button and advance the base more to give you
the same total.... Myself I like the advance as long
as it works well (not sticking and retards)

Go for it. It will make everything better,,idle, throttle response, no timing lag/fluctuation. Make sure your battery is fully charged and your starter is in good shape and you will be good to go.Some have complained about kick back while starting. I have found that the battery or starter are usually causing those type problems. You can also wire the ignition to be turned on while spinning the motor if you want to run timing on the higher numbers.. Try it,,if you don't like it, you can always put it back the way it was..

Thank you guys for the advice! I locked out the advance on my MSD distributor and it fires up instantly and idles great now. I even had to turn my idle screw down about 3/4 turn. It seems to have alot better throttle response. THANKS...Glenn

I did it did not like it so I run the mopar or mister gasket light mopar springs in it for more idle advance than the lightest MSD springs give.

Re: Locking out the advance ? - 03/05/12 07:48 AM

i locked mine at 34, hard to start- 540 10-1 compression, big new battery and new mini starter.
when i spun a rod bearing and disassembled i had massive cap walk (for a 50 mile engine). surprised me, maybe detonation???
maybe other issues...
