8 3/4 setup question - 02/12/12 09:48 PM

working on putting this rear together (new parts) . moser case, strange 30 spline spool, strange 4.30 gears, strange bearing kit, ratech solid spacer. measuring things it's calling for .060" of shims under the pinion bearing to get to the 2.770 checking distance marked on the pinion. i've checked it twice and got the same number which sounds like a lot to me. this new case looks to be a fortune cookie which i kinda expected given the price so i can't be too sure of their quality control. any thoughts? i don't want to have to be trying to press this bearing on and off repeatedly.

Go to parts house and buy a bearing by itself. Take a brake hone ,and hone the bearding so it will slide on the pinion shaft. It saves time and will not destroy your good bearing. .060 is not the most I have seen. Remember each machined dimension has a + &- and they add up sometimes in the wrong direction. That is the reason, for shims.

Every aftermarket 489 case I have assembled, set up with around 0.038" (+ - 0.005) pinion depth shims.

BTW, there are only 2 sources for new 489 castings and neither is Moser. Are you working on a black powder-coated casting? If so, I recommend checking the oil galleys carefully, as they are usually packed with casting sand.

I would start with a 0.038" shim.

thanks Cass yes it is the black one and i didn't expect that moser made it though it is sold by them. i was figuring that it was a Yukon but now that you say there's two sources i guess it's isn't. yea this thing was pretty cruddy and rough when i received it sounds like i got the less desirable of the two, is the Yukon a better piece?. i spent a good bit of time scrubbing and deburring it before i even began to look at setting it up.

I built many of those cases. They used to be sold as a Yukon product. The castings are OK, but they need to be cleaned and de-burred badly.

I'm actually working with the manufacturer right now, to improve the quality and clenliness of the part.

it was terribly dirty with a ton of casting flash and whatnot. i had to spend some time with a pencil grinder going through it to get off the stuff i felt was going to break off anyhow. if it wasn't powder coated i would've glass beaded the crap out of it. there was also some rust damage to one of the adjusters i ended up putting it in the surface grinder and making a couple passes over the bearing seating surface to clean it up. it was back ordered to begin with and if it had been a smaller lighter part i probably would have rejected it and sent it back. is this something they could toss in a vibratory type deburring machine, it was one of the rougher pieces i've ever seen.

I've been dealing with that for years.

The sharp edges around the gasket surface are going to be milled off in the future. The casting will be manually blasted through the oil galleys before roto-blasting.

I also requested they get rid of the powder-coating. Future versions will come with large, forged steel caps.

Hay Doc, Who made the new 742 nodular case I just bought from you. That is a real nice piece.

mind reader, that's pretty much what i was thinking. i would rather have had it shipped raw than all that crappy coating and using the stock style caps leaves one of the best improvements on the table

The nodular iron 742 case with thick, forged caps is made by the same manufacturer.

The next batch of 489 cases will share the same caps and casting as the new 742 version.

The cap forgings actually originated from a 3.25" bore 9" "race-case".
