You guys ever have a converter that wouldn't seat?

You guys ever have a converter that wouldn't seat? - 02/10/12 11:47 PM

I have a fresh trans (904) and a brand new Ultimate converter but as far as I can get the converter down there just isn't any clearance with the flex plate. With the converter down as far as it will go there is only .400" from the bell housing to the converter bolt lugs. I have stabbed plenty of converters in my day and never had a problem. It hits two sets of splines and won't go down any further. Any ideas?

I did that too, broke the ears off the pump.It needs 3 clicks to get it in.I think mine was about .400 then a click and it went.Thats the frist time i broke it.

If you have help and can stand the trans on end, just spin the converter and it will drop from gravity. My Dad taught me that trick years ago.

EYEBALL the pump tangs ... they are probably way-off.

Might also check the tangs or tabs on the front pump. I had one that was really tough and turned out the tabs were a bit chewed and made the conv hard to stab.Once I replaced the pump gears everthing went fine.

You don't even want me to rehash my converter saga.

Everything looks good and the tags are turning but it won't go all the way down. I have tried putting it on its tail and spinning the converter just can't get it to fall.

I sometimes have to clean up the splines on the input shaft with a file, especially with TCI stuff.

i would put the support, take drive gear & see if it slips on the hub. if it does, i would then check out the splines on input shaft & stator shaft. seeya.

I had trouble getting my 727 converter to seat.
My problem was the max lug pump gear did not have a chamfer on the converter side so it hitting the converter and not centering. Took the pump apart, and put a slight chamfer of the gear and it finally went together correctly.

Have you measured the length of the snout? I had a new convertor for a 727 that had the wrong snout on it. I finally checked it against my old one and found it was too long. They had used a snout that was designed for a specialized application not a standard length. Just saying might be worth a look.

I found some burrs on the stator that I took a file to and cleaned up all the splines and got the converter on another .060" and got everything put together and fired up yesterday. Thanks for all the suggestions.
