GTX IN "FRESH GREEN PAINT"!....2/8/2012 - 02/07/12 08:26 PM

The X is in full primer! Looks smooth as a baby's bottom end! The sealer will be applied tomorrow...with 2 light coats of the base GREEN! Here are a few shots I took today. I'll have some shots tomorrow...of the GTX in an "eye-pleasing" shade of green! STAY TUNED! Randy B.

LAST ONE! Pictures really don't show how "smooth" the body panels came out! Looks MUCH BETTER in person! Can't wait to see the 1st coat of the green on it...TOMORROW!

Thanks,fellas! John..I might have a hard time sleeping tonight..knowing the X will be painted tomorrow! Mark,my painter works on the car 3 days a week...but,it's his only project during the winter...although last week he did some body work and paint on a '70' Cuda hood,in BLACK...came out BEAUTIFUL!

"C'mon,Randy! You're killin' us!" Sorry,Rick...I was out running a bunch of errands,and just got home at 6:30! Just remember,the green on the X is flat looking...until it gets wet-sanded,and clear over-coat applied...which will be done next week! I'll post 4-6 pics so you can get an idea of the color...and the "arrow straight" body panels! Looks KILLER! I could NOT tell where ANY of the body work was done! SUCCESS!!!! Here's another shot! This shot shows the truest depiction of the shade of green the paint actually looks like in person! A tad darker than F-5 Limelight..the '69' Factory color!

Hi,Al! My painter waits a week after spraying the base coat..then wet sands it,and sprays the clear coat. The dull green doesn't do much for the car,I know! But,I just wanted to show the "before" and "after" wet sand,and clear coat pics! Should be a BIG difference! BTW....BEST of LUCK with your paint job! Is it on the Barracuda?

Not saying its wrong but I have never seen it done like that! I have always painted them with the doors trunk and hood off so the jambs get done at the same time and then spray the clear the same day as the base coat! Looks great and cant wait to see it finished up!

I normally spray all the jambs and that stuff as I
spray the base then move to the exterior and shoot
that... then go back for the second coat on base...
that includes doing the jambs again... then set up
for clear... doing the jambs first again... what I

So, what your saying is that Randys fingers get to heal up for a week before he does it again? LOL! I'm sure the finished product will be awesome. Guess I will have to wear white gloves when we put the motor back in?

We always did the jambs, trunk, engine compartment first then taped them off to do the body - that way any tape lines were in the jambs and not on the body. As to wet-sanding the base coat - is your paint metallic? If so; any more than a LIGHT scuff with scotchbrite or 1000 grit paper to remove the overspray before the clearcoat can leave a brushed or grainy appearance in the finished product.

Thanks for the insight,Willie! The paint is a metallic,and gets a very light wet-sanding. I could care less in what order ANYTHING gets done on the X...as long as the "finished product" looks good! I know it will!

Must be an old school guy. I've got some brass in my car from an old repair. Can't MIG weld around it but hopefully you'll never need to. I do. Your car's gonna look great, nice to see a car go in and out of the bodyshop instead of going in and sitting there for a year.

Thanks,everyone! Al..you're as anxious as me to see the "SHINY STUFF" sprayed on! ...Doug,BEST of luck with your paint job! Hope it comes out as well as you planned! ....Bob,Tony IS definately "old school"! He's been doing this kind of work for over 40 yrs. According to some of the comments made on this thread...he's UNCONVENTIONAL,in his methods....and order in which he proceeds. That's fine with me! I know VERY LITTLE about body work and paint! All I know is that he does EXCELLENT work...and met my measly little budget! The X went to his place in early December..and should be done in 2 weeks. Not a bad turn-around time,in my opinion! Randy BTW...here's what the "finished" color will look like! SHINY GREEN!..just for you,Al!

That's funny,,, I didn't think you were allowed to paint cars if you didn't drink beer!!! On a true note, a friend of mine is probably one of the better painters in this area. I was helping him the other day get a '68 Vette ready to paint. He has stopped drinking recently. He said he had never painted a car sober before. I told the owner,,"we have a problem!!"..it turned out OK, but, he did have a couple of minor flaws to correct.

Chapper,that's how it is with a LOT of skilled people! They're so use to being in a certain "state" when they're applying the skills of their trade...that when they quit,and get off the liquor,pot..or even beer...their skills mysteriously erode! I've seen it happen more than a few times in the past! It's amazing how some of these skilled labor wizards do the great work that they do..while being DRUNK..or STONED on one narcotic or another! I suppose primer,paint thinner...and paint,sure don't help the situation,either!

i remember back when all the painters were lushes. my car painter was different. a carton of pepsi's and and bag of candy bars really got him motivated; this is true, got witnesses. i'm a retired sheet metal worker and never got hooked on the sauce but know some that did. i think my only motivation was staying pissed off all the time. world got a lot brighter when i retired, lol. keep the green pics coming. f5 is a nice color when its clean and straight!

Thanks Lew,Devin! I have seen some shades of F-5,on pics posted here,that I didn't really care for! Too light a shade of green for me! That's why mine is a "variation"...a tad darker! Basically between a F-5...and F-8. My driver side quarter was actually darker than the rest of the car...which WAS F-5! Can't wait to see how it's going to look with the "shiny stuff" next week!

Jon...you know what the "nay sayers" can do! The GTX has been GREEN since 1969...and it's been pretty dependable for me,since 1996!...so why change a good thing? "CHANGE" doesn't necessarily mean for the better!...if you know what I mean!

I have heard that phrase before but I cannot ge any one to explain to me what it means about green racecar's.

Randy, car's lookin good, the shiney stuff will change the cars whole additude and give you a sense of acomplishment when finished.

I have always heard that green was 'bad luck'. I just figured that was an "old wives' tale". Recently, I am not sure, but, it might be the truth,,,,,according to my spouse!!!

Watching for the finished product Randy! Looks great so far I think my Challenger was originally F-8 and kind of wish I had gone back to Original when painting it.

thats an old fable started by the harley crowd back in the early 60,s.we always used to say "it dont matter what color you paint it as long as its black"with that being said ive owned a f7 green 69 GTX for over 10 years and allthough im not a wealthy man my life has truly been blessed.
