First time on a chassis dyno...

First time on a chassis dyno... - 02/06/12 02:36 AM

My buddy fairly recently bought a chassis dyno and finally blew the dust and cobwebs off my junk... found 40hp on the motor (was way lean) and found over 100hp on the bottle (was way fat) anyways my 496" street motor with a solid flat tappet cam, flat top pistons and out of the box edelbrocks made 517 hp to the tires on motor and 837 hp on the unit... still have some tuning in it too!!! Not bad huh?

he said he found an extra 100 hp. Not a 100 hp shot

Thanks guys... yes, by unit I mean on the bottle, I gained 100hp over my initial nitrous jetting, just by leaning it out a bit... it was WAY fat... chassis dynos are awesome...

Chassis dynos are mostly a joke and give crazy numbers to say the least. Jason Pettis was explaining how they measure the ability to move the wheels at a certain amount of time and effort and that`s why my hi-9-sec car only put down 485 hp and torque and my buddys mid 10-sec car put down 550...... Not bagging on your numbers but, what does it run at the track as you`ve claimed to have a 9-sec street car but where`s the time slip increments for our viewing pleasure.

Your right Dom... at 837hp in a 3000 car it probably will run 12s... lol

Since my last time slip was mentioned, it was 2 years ago at Barona with more weight and 100 less HP... 1.32 60 ft, 6.20 @ 113mph... Car has a 3.73 gear so it pulls pretty hard out the back... (in the 1/4 on the street)

Re: First time on a chassis dyno... - 02/06/12 04:25 PM

I never put much stock in the numbers off our local wheel dyno...but they are a great tuning tool. If you can can find 40 horsepower they are worth the time and effort, doesn't really matter what the actual numbers are. The popular local shop uses a "half correction" factor (to sealevel).?!

All I know is, there are an aweful lot of 500+ horsepower cars that come off that dyno that only run 12s at the dragstrip. Since my engine only made 430 on the dyno it should read less at the wheels, but running 11.50s it would probably show over 600 on that dyno!

Not all dynos are generous, mine made 460, time is in my sig.
At what RPM was max power ?.

No hate here just don`t put much faith in chassis dynos except for afr readings, timing etc. Your car`s faster than mine based on those et`s but, all motor for me .............for now.

Don't know if you were asking me, but my max hp is at 6200rpm.

Dom, Your car hauls ass for being all motor... no doubt, and I somewhat agree that Dyno's arent all that, Was my first time... But free power is always a good thing, I was content with how it ran before, so to pick up all that power was just awesome... Even with a bottle, 837HP was unreal to me for a set of unported Eddys!

My 837HP was at 6000rpm

Re: First time on a chassis dyno... - 02/06/12 07:35 PM

The chassis dyno is a great tuning tool as was mentioned previously. I must qualify this by saying it needs to be a "loaded" chassis dyno that can simulate wind resistance and other factors. To me the numbers are meaningless UNLESS being compared to before and after modifications on the same dyno under the same conditions. There are just to many factors/settings that can impact the numbers output by the dyno. It is a tuning tool and nothing more. I say this as an owner/operator of a Mustang Chassis Dyno. It has saved me oodles of time (and money) that would normally have been spent going to the track and testing (actually sitting in the staging lanes mostly).

And for reference my car weighs 3700#'s, and on street tires through the mufflers goes 10.5@126 N/A. On my dyno the car makes 439hp to the wheels.

You using a plate of fogger?

How much fuel jet size did you pull out of it?

Its a big shot plate... Ended up with 93F 102N @ 6 PSI... still way fat too...

At 3550 my car made 398 and went 11.48 @ 120 (no converter or gear but pulled really well)

Nice numbers, and sounds like it was a good experience.

I've never had a chassis dyno session....whether with my own stuff or somebody else's, where I didn't enjoy it and where I didn't learn a little something. I think it's well worth doing but obviously not everyone agrees.

Blackfish... for sure, Ill hit ya up...
Zippy, I totally agree, I learned alot, and saved alot of time and money VS track testing... really looking forward to hitting the track now to see where it stands, most likely will be a local 1/8th mile track that is a bit more forgiving on running past the 6.40 mark (cars only legal to 6.40/10.0)... then it will be time for that 9 second slip... hoping it will be deep in the 9s...
