race trailers?? V nose or regular?? - 02/02/12 10:10 AM

I am starting a search for an enclosed car trailer in the 28' to 32'
range and was wondering,
Has anyone noticed a sizable difference between a V nose and a regular trailer in towing????
I Sold my big trailer,(53') and my truck pulled it Fine so a smaller one will be no problem but just wondering if the V nose is worth the wasted space in the nose area.
I have to build a garage first but if a Good deal comes I would probably buy it.

I wouldn't call the V nose 'wasted space'...actually gives more space.
Only problem I have encountered, is the turning radius is a little more limited if you have a slide in camper on your truck...DAMHIK

C-guy .... but there is "wasted" space ... vs a box that is the same length. I have had both ....a sloped-nose and a flat-front .... I would rather have the additional space. And there is NOT a big diff in MPG .... towing at the speeds we do.

Doc, my little trailer is 24'. It measures 24' on the inside BEFORE the V starts, actually about 24'-6" before the V starts. If it didn't have the V nose, that would be the end, the front wall would be there, and there wouldn't be any more space,,,SO,,I figure I have a little extra room in the nose versus the square nose..??

Probably,,,would have enough room to haul yer ol azz to the races!

Iam buying a 20'with V nose the box is 20'its actully 22'.

It depends on what your pulling it with. My V-nose was the best pulling trailer behind 3/4ton pickup that I ever had. It cut thru the air and the sloped front really planted the trucks rear tires at highway speeds. That said, it was awful behind small motorhome. The height of the mh made the vfront a sloped roof a mute point.
Square front trailers lack the aerodynamics but are much better for storage cabinets, etc.

C and b ... they are specing-them-out diff now then. I used to sell Haulmark trailers .... the last one I had at the shop was a 32 footer slope-nose that had a lounge in it. The one I have now is a 24 footer was a "straight" front.

I believe you are correct Doc. They are evidently specing them different. I worked part time at a camper sales in '70-'75. At that time, the campers were measured from the farthest/longest points. That meant a 24' camper was 24' from the tail light's edge to the end of the ball hitch. Maybe the new spec is to make you think you are getting a "deal" when the trailer is actually longer than what it is being sold as....if mine was a 28' trailer,, I would have to agree that there is some wasted space with the V nose...NOW that you have cleared that up for us Doc,,,could you give us some 'pinion angle' info??

I haul a slide-in camper in the back of my truck and my 28' v-noise allows me to make sharper turns opposed to a flat nose. The camper would have connected with the trailer if the front was flat. Something I never considered when I made my purchase.

Any difference at all in MPG with the V-nose? Even 1 MPG, when doing a 2000 mile round trip to St.Louis, would almost add up to the price of an entry fee.

Evidently,,you haven't turned as close as I have, or your V-nose is shorter than mine..

I have a King America trailer. It is not a 'top of the line' type trailer by any means...but..It is 'top of the line' for my budget.

not all v's are created equal either! Mine was an all aluminum Renegade made by Rance Aluminum. It was a 20' rectangular box with additional 4' Vfront. The tongue stuck out another foot so they obviously used a 5' motorhome tongue. I would not buy any trailer without that option, square of vfront. I

I've had both, 4ft V ... and nose cone

i have a 28 ft v nose trailer and dont care for it much i dont think it helps on fuel milage at all

I have a 28' Pace flat front and absolutely love it. I pull it with a 2003 2500 4x4 four door with a Hemi in it. With my dragster and golf cart in it it pulls like a dream. Just my .02

Thanks for the info guys I Appreciate it.
I have had 2 pace 24' trailers and I have a 53' united trailer
and my V-10 dually has pulled them all without to much problems.
The 53' trailer takes a little while to get it up to 60 but it will go 70 down the highway like it's not back there.
So far most have said it isn't much different so it looks like it comes down to design and looks.
Anymore oppinions????

I'm suprised you have clearence issues. Maybe a hitch extension would help out.

I have a 2' v-nose and a camper that is 9.5' long with a 16" hitch extension. The v-nose puts the front corners of the trialer 2' further back then a flat nose trailer. I'm sure if my trailer was a flat nose, I would hit just pulling into my driveway.
