rons fuel injection - 01/02/12 05:12 PM

wanted to know if anyone uses rons primer plus system and if u do can you tell me how big the holes are in the spray bar and how many are there

Cant tell you exactly but mine are pretty tiny (like .020 or so)and I believe there are 4 of them two shooting to the front and two to the back. This is all by memory though. The valve controls how much fuel goes in. So as long as you are close you should be OK. I actually drilled and tapped my intake to accept it and did away with the plate because of hood clearance issues.

When cold pour some gas in the injectors and it will crank fine, after its warm it takes a little getting use to but you can still crank it. Or drill a hole in the intake and tap it for a Holley jet to inject gas into the engine on start up.

Eric,
Can you show us how you drilled and setup your primer system? I have the same hood clearance issue and have not ran the primer because of the height issues. Would be nice to have on the initial start of the day.

ialso am going to drill my intake but i think i am going to buy the priming kit from rons to get pump and tank an lines then i am going to use a nitrous spray bar i already have the holes in it are approx .035 and there r 8 holes if yours r only .020 i will plug off aleast 4 of the holes but sounds like i also need to have a pressure regulator.

I love the Ron's primer plus system with the spray bar. It starts great, builds heat with the gasoline tank, and drives in the pits on gas saving alcohol, clean oil, keeps heat in the motor, etc.

I don't have exact measurements but the holes are tiny for a better spray at idle and low throttle driving in the pits, maybe 0.020" dia. The Ron's plate I have has 4 or 6 holes (I forget) spraying slightly up to mix with the incoming air. The adjustable needle valve is easy to set. Larger holes will be fine for priming, but not as good for idling and driving in the pits (poor spray, more like hose).

IMO, buy the Ron's system. But if you must experiment... at least use their plate spray bar and put the rest together yourself if you feel like it.

If you want to try that plate, plug all but 4 holes, IMO. The Ron's system uses a pump with 3-6 psi, and then the needle valve to reduce it futher (much further, IMO). Don't forget the solinoid valve to shut off the primer lines and prevent siphoning when running on the main fuel system. Check out the needle valve from McMaster-Carr #46425K11 (1/8 NPT) two way.

I made my spray bar and drilled 4 holes at.040" in the 1/8" tube. Cheapo mr gasket electric street pump, a used nitrous fuel solenoid from a swap meet, a parker flow control (make sure to plumb it the right direction DAHIK), a jr dragster fuel cell, and a 3 position switch (momentary-off-on). Wish I would have done this when I put the toilet on, not a year later.
Hope this helps, Beep

I use it on my car to start and build heat.

I left the gas system on my car and just bought the plate off of James.

I think mine has 6-8 holes in it and they are very small.

Maybe .015-.020 or so but never measured them.

I just took the spray bar out of the Ron's plate and we drilled and tapped identical holes about half and inch from the top of the intake plenum just below the throttle body. Works as advertised. I use it to get the car started on cold start and pretty much put it over on alcohol immediately but pull the barrel valve closed. Squirt it to start each time I start the car. And when I am done for the day full the barrel valve shut and load the car on the primer so that only gas sits in the cylinders during the week.

I did the same thing as Eric on my car, drill and tapped the intake and installed the spray bar. Make sure the spray bar is supported on the deadhead side, I epoxyed the dead end into the intake. If you don't do this the reversion inside the intake will break the spray bar.
I start and warm the car on the primer plus and if the car cools down too much between rounds I will drive it to the lanes on the primer also.I can save about 5 gallons of alcohol in a night of racing.
The only drawback I have found is you need to keep up on your sparkplugs, the quality of gas today is substandard to say the least, James will tell you the same thing.

Re: rons fuel injection - 01/04/12 11:45 PM

May be in the tune but I find I can heat mine up faster with barrel valve half shut and then just cracking the throttle thus causing it to sound like it dies. Warming it at the beginning of the day completely up on gas I think causes two issues. One it heats the engine up faster than the other components like the tranny and rear end. And the other is the spark plug situation. Didnt change my plugs the entire year.
And here is the thing that really shocked me. I used SUBSTANTIALLY less alcohol this year on the fuel injection than I have in previous years. To the tune of about 3-4 barrels less for the same amount of runs. Again I only use the primer to get it out of the trailer and back in the trailer and a squirt to start the car. Thats it! Double entered at Chandler where my pit was on the front row (basically the return road) I made 13 passes on 12 gallons of Alky. And since I was doubled I was not pulling the barrel valve halfway shut coming up the return road either. So much for the fuel injection eating tons of fuel theory.

I used the shut off valve almost closed (not the barrel valve) to heat and drive in the pits on alcohol for years. That technique works, just takes a few times to get used to since if you go to far the engine dies from fuel shut off. If you are having issues with running on gas, I would try adjusting the gas mixture with the needle valve. But every combo could be different.

But I have saved more fuel using the Ron's primer plus. Since I was running E85, I used the same fuel and tank for both the main and primer systems (E85). The use of the primer plus is easier (but the shut off valve trick is not hard), and I cut my fuel consumption by 10%-15% compared to the leaning with the shut off valve. When running mechanical injection with alcohol, you can burn more alcohol driving to & from the pits then going down the track if you don't take some precautions. Not to mention the proper tune.

Re: rons fuel injection - 01/05/12 03:18 AM

Should have said shutoff cable which controls the shutoff on the barrel valve. Mine will run fine on the primer around the pits, I just have better luck using the "shutoff".
