Indy Heads ?? Is Head Bolts / Or Studs - 01/01/12 04:58 PM

Gentalmen,

My heads are getting work done by the BEST shop around and I want to install them with the Best Bolts or Studs.. What do you use on your heads.

I'm looking into a stud kit from APR.

I used the Manley bolts that came with the heads just in case I need to pull the heads in the car, lots easier with bolts

I think a lot of replies will say that it depends on the use of the motor. However, studs are more of a pain when installing or removing a head. It will also depend on which heads you have and which headers you're using as to whether they will clear the studs.

ARP studs have a hex in the top of the stud so you can pull them out with the head on the block. I would use studs for the increased clamping force.

Since most Indy heads only require 70 lbs ft torque the Manley bolts are fine,in max hp/compression applications we recommend head studs. So if your not exceeding 700hp and 13/1 CR we would use the bolts.

So BG use Manley bolts Ok not APR? I'm also switching gaskets, Was running Fel-Pro 1105 039 Moving to Clark setup? What you think.

Motor is 12.8 to 1 and 518" T&D rocker setup.1.5 This combo is a flat tappit roller setup.

everyone has opinions mine is that bolts should not be used in main cap, cylinder head or rocker gear attachment. every time you pull up on a bolt it damages the threads especially in aluminum heads. i would never use bolts on the rocker gear of an aluminum head even if it has some type of insert. i've just seen too many aluminum heads with damaged threads. studs also offer more effective clamping.

Fel-Pro performance gaskets are fine for your application,Cometics are great but not necessary. When you say Clarke, are you talking copper?

Unless your o-ringing the heads and reciever groving the block deck,I would not recommend copper head gaskets. We have gone to Cometic head gaskets in any application over 14/1CR and use them on our blower engine.

I'm pirating the post. Bob what gaskets for 15--1? What torque do you recommend on the studs? I'll say in advance my -1s are milled down to 57cc.
Thanks Doug

Doug,
We use Cometics on most all our 14/5 and 15/1 combos. We generally spray them with copper coat and torque 7/16 studs and bolts at 75# and 1/2 studs and bolts at 85#.We also put a skim coat of ultral copper around and water passages if necessary,we use ultra copper on the water passages on all copper/o-ringed applications. These torque specs are with molylube.

Thank's BG and others for the quick on-line help. I will order Fel-Pro again.Waiting to see how much is being cut on the heads then I will order gaskets.

This is Official It's all about Gaskets now...

Yes,we have in the past and found the ones that came coated didn't seal well and some were very hard.We usually cleaned them with acid or other cleaners and heated them to get them to anneal and take seat at the o-rings.The softer the copper the better the seal.

Why would you not, or did you not trust the advice from the shop doing the work? They should have had good sound advice on the topic.

Change of Subject Whose air pan base are you using and where did you buy it? I noticed it's the same as the guy in Arizona who rebuilt his Cuda. Thanks, Dave A
