Any Quality Differences In Steering Racks?

The steering rack in my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 is leaking AGAIN for the 2nd, or maybe even 3rd time. The original rack was replaced a long time ago when the truck was maybe 7 or 8 years old with an after market one. I can't recall if that one was also replaced, I'd have to look through my file later at home. Prices seem to vary quite a bit on these things & range from $175 to almost $600 & some with new tie rod ends. I was wondering if anyone else has had better results with one brand lasting longer than another brand?

Most are done by Cardone and simply rebranded. Because of that, I'd search for a good used to install.

Although I am not sure if I want to tackle a project to install a used one. I do see them online a little cheaper used, but not enough of a difference to justify it. Some of the wrecking yards are asking just as much for a used one as a new one.

For new the only option is what the aftermarket offers. That said I would probably buy a unit from one of the big familiar chains. They have very good warranties- usually a no hassle exchange. At least if you have to replace again it will be much more convenient dealing with the brick and mortar store than an online business- and I am a huge Rock auto fan.

I don't recommend a reman. Buy new if possible. I replaced the rack in my $230.00 1993 Dakota with a reman because the truck was such a cheap beater. Several weeks it broke the input shaft from the column after hitting a Mi pot hole that just appeared over night. It was icy and slick out and also with no steering, it steered and slid right into a light pole. Taking out the pole and totaling the truck.

Would probably eliminate any shipping costs, too.

Found new Mopar ones for both 2wd and 4wd but, they are $650 to $750 not including shipping. Something to throw out there is find a used rack from wrecking yard and maybe install the seals yourself dependent on how much time you have? A new aftermarket one for about $330 to $400.
