What is a good tire/size for a Ramcharger?

What is a good tire/size for a Ramcharger? - 02/03/22 03:40 AM

Since it’s looking like I won’t be converting my 75’ Trailduster into a drag truck, though I would look at some possible wheel/tire combinations. Nothing will be happening for a long time, but would like to get an idea what works great, looks good and won’t break the bank. I’m thinking 15x8 rims with stock pattern. Mostly all season driving, no off road and tell enough to be decent. Any suggestions or/and pics?

I have always run a 8" rim up front with a 235/75/15 Goodyear wrangler radial. buy them around 100 bucks no road warranty. good package deals on ebay/free dielvery - wear/ride/ daily street duty get thumbs up from me.

I have run all 4 corners with that combo so I can rotate them and the swaybar clears parking stops by 1/4".

I also at the moment have my stepside with that on front with the rear having a

10" wide 4.5 backset rim with a 29x9.50x15 wild country mud tire which is about the same height as the 235/75/15 on a 8" rim

you could go anywhere from a 29" - 32" tall & 9.50 - 10.50 - 11.50 wide tire on that 10"w 4.5 backset rim with out tubbing anything & stock width axle.

before I lowered my 85 stepside I did run a 10" wide 3.75 backset rim with a 32x11.50x15 mud tire stock width 9 1/4 axle never touched outside fender lip but if it ever bottomed the axle to the frame they would have rubbed middle of tire bulge.

10" with 4.5 BS is perfect with the stock axle width.

you can run nascar look with 10"w 4.5 BS 295/50/15 BFGs all 4 corners. I ran a 85RC that way for a while.

if you ever lower/tub it....?

FYI-good info I confirmed ---I have a 67-C-body 8 3/4 in my 85 stepside now. with the 10" 4.5BS 29x9.50x15 they are too far in for my liking I will have to look to see if the axle rim comb would work without tub work.

I did just test fit my 12" wide 4.5 bs rims 29x15x15 on the 85 and they are a little to far out. but a 12" w 6"BS rim would tuck it in there just right but needs bed tubbed flush to frame. new rim/tires soon!

my 88-440 truck has the shackle flip axle flop a-body 8 3/4 with the 12"w 4.5 BS 29x15x15 M/Ts tubbed flush with frame front has 3.5w 1.5 bs rim - 165-15 drag skinnys or I have 7"w 4.5bs 235/7515 Goodyear on it.

I sure would like to get a hold of a TD/RC 2x just for a 440/4 speed A-body 8 3/4 with skinnys & fatty's.

wave Hi nigs , I would find out what Size tire that truck was born with along with the Factory Gear ratio thats IN it , and what it was born with being 40+ years old . Too big of a tire with crappy gears like 2.94 or a 3.23 in a truck will make for a miserable driving Truck , when Trucks should be putting Smiles on your face . A 235-75-15 or a 31-10.50-15 with a 4.10 will make for a FUN Truck in Town and still work off road . drive Ronnie

Thanks for the info everyone. The truck originally cam with 28’s and I believe the ratios were 3:55 so it would be good with taller rubber. It looks good but I have though about upping the hight a couple/three inches to make the rubber a bit more bigger. Not sure as what I finally want, this why I’m here asking questions. Stuff could still change. Will see what options I have when the time comes.

IIRC, 4x4's came with 31x10.5's? (30.5) edit: optional on 4x4, no spare tire cover 2wd P235/75R15 (29"). P275/60R15 (28") is what I usually ran on my '82 2wd Ramcharger. That was the widest for that truck, axle wasn't quite centered, rubbed the drivers side wheel house very slightly, kept it cleaned off.

All 3 Ramchargers that went through my family had 31's with 3.55's. I lifted the '77 and put 33's on it, the taller tires definitely wear the 44FBJ full time front axle faster.
I have 37's for the '78 now, but it's going together with Dana 60/70 combo.

If I decide I want a bit taller tire, should I look to lift it 1’-2’ inches for clearance? Appreciate the info everyone.

31s fit without lift and play well with the existing drivetrain. Bigger tires are going to want lift and gears.

As unmolested as this truck appears, I'd keep things stock.

I put these tires on my 1975 short wheel base Dodge power wagon. They fit and look great on it!

LT285/75r17 - Same as a 33 but a little over 9" of tread width.....I'm a HUGE fan of these Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT

I put those tires (same size and everything) on both my wife's trucks, her 74 Ramcharger and her FJ Cruiser
