What year did they have stacked headlights?

Wasn't 1979 the first year?

I thought it was the only year but could it also be 1980?

And then Dodge switched over to single rectangular headlights with the redesigned grille in 1981?

Thanks.

79 and 80
.
I've had two 1980's. One with round headlights and one with the quad lights.

Well that doesn't help. I'm still confused. grin

I looked at a lot of pics online and saw both single round & rectangle quad lights also.

Wonder if the single headlights were base and the quad headlights were part of a package such as the Prospector Package & LRE

Thanks anyway, Mark up

'79 was the first year, and '80 was the last, but ALL '79 and '80 trucks didn't have them. '79 and '80 with single round light still had a unique two year only grill.

Thanks, Larry. Goes along with what Mark said. Less confused now. Interesting fact about the grilles. Appreciate it.

Really curious as to why some had single round and others had stacked quads. Time to check out sales brochures on ebay.

Stacked lights were an option.

Kind of what I was thinking. I just saw that quad headlights were list as standard equipment with the Prospector Package in a sales brochure.

Above is correct, that 79 and 80 had quad stacked as options. The other issue is 80 was different due to blacked out grille centers. That's it. I blacked out the center of my black 79 4x4 warlock just for my own preference.

'79 was the first year for the new design hood also. '78-back had the "bird bath" style. up

74-76 is only years I wasn't big fan of. Quad stacked '79 my favorite, then a tie between 72-73 and 77-78.

It was mainly base trucks for those 2 years that had round lights. Lil red express was standard with the stock ones and I think pretty much anything else that was Adventurer had the stacked lights too.

catfight

'74- '76 was my favorite year. I used to not be a fan of the '77, '78 but they've grown on me (interesting how C-body Plymouths had the same light treatment, but not Dodges). '79-'80 I'll take either way.

Regardless, it always kinda amazed me that they would make the entire grill and surround out of ONE piece (aside from the headlight trim). Ding a corner or smack a bird at fwy speed, EVERYTHING has to be replaced.

Well I agree with you on the '77/'78. They've grown on me too. Use to not like them. The stacked quads are my fave because my 2nd vehicle ever (when I was 20 years old) was a '79 Adventurer 150, shortbed, 318/727 had the stacked quads, so I suppose that's why....sentimental reasons. The '74-'76 just look too busy to me me. The '72 and '73 are just cleaner looking to me. I recently saw a NOS set of the quad headlight surrounds on ebay for $800. Love to have them, but no thanks at that price.

There's one near me that keeps popping up on CL and FB for $1400. Have heard rumors that one actually sold for that price at Carlisle this year. Probably one of those $%@# deep pocket LRE guys.

That's my guess as to who they are counting on. Someone restoring an LRE or at least an LRE owner. Mine look decent and that's good enough. I don't want to drive around with $1000 or so in just headlight trim alone.

The only way I'd justify paying that much for them is if the rest of my truck was mint too.
I bought mine used a couple years back for maybe $45 for the pair on ebay.

Bought my LRE around 97 from a kid working the parts counter at a Dodge dealer. It was a basket case and he had gone in the Locator to find a few bits for it including a grille and both head light buckets new in the box. Wanna say he paid like $400 but ya know, been a few years.

Or a false buy to say “hey look these sold for this much” trying to justify their price

Sad part about those bezels is I'm wondering after 40+ years I'm wondering if they have those pits in them. I know I've had NOS Cordoba bezels that had pits in them after age and dependent I guess upon storage conditions. RockAuto about 14 years ago use to sell plastic replacement ones but, they can crack easy near the mounting hole if you tighten them too much.
