2011 RAM TRANNY SHIFTING ISSUE - 04/29/20 10:01 PM

MY 2011 RAM, 5.7 4X4 with only 26K mile is not shifting properly. Other than an OBD, I have no way to troubleshoot the issue. I haven't started the truck in about three weeks. Today I went out to take it for a ride and the check engine lite came on. Soon after I noticed that it would start out in second gear and shift erratically. I had a problem when I first bought the truck with the large wire harness connector on the passenger side under the hood. So that's where I went first. After separating it connector, a ton of water came out.I washed the connectors out with brake kleen then blew them out with compressed air. I figured this was the problem? NOPE!!! It starts out in first gear, but goes into second real fast. If I kick it down for passing gear it drops into first but won't come out unless I leave off the gas and let it coast for a while.. I pulled the input and out put speed sensors and did a continuity check. They both read 600 ohms..I don't know what they are suppose to read. Both are the same, so I swapped them and the problem still exists..Any clue as to what the heck is going on??? The codes that are on the OBD are PO716. PO869, PO933 and PO1794..

HELP!!!!!!!!

From the codes sounds like a wiring issue. p0716 input speed sensor1 circuit error,p0869 line pressure high,p0933 hydraulic line pressure sensor range/performance,p1794 speed sensor ground circuit.start checking all ground wires,A wiring dia. will make it easier& is your friend. Also check all connectors&plugs, related to trans, good luck.

I think you need to figure out how the water is getting in the wire connector and fix that problem. An electrical connector filled with water will freak out the computer because its not seeing the things it expects to see from whatever sensor those wires go to. I suspect all the codes you are getting are a result of that water in the connector for those wires. My nxt concern would be weather the water shorted out the sensors or even shorted out the computer. Gene

I totally agree. But I don't have a schematic to troubleshoot the system. I've cleaned the big connector on the passenger side wheel well. This seems to control everything with the tranny. I clear the codes, but the tranny still acts up. I've done this at least five time today. With very low mileage on the truck, I can't believe that I'm having an issue. Really pissing me off! I need to know what connector go where, for tranny function. Locations on the truck and what readings I should get with a digital volt/ohm meter.

This maybe a dumb suggestion but try disconnecting the battery positive for a couple of minutes and touch the positive cable to ground. then hook it back up and see what happens.

Brake clean is not your friend here, use an electrical contact cleaner, soak it down really good, blow it dry and repeat several times then let it air dry a few hours. Pack it with dielectric grease when reassembling.

UPDATE.. Had the truck in my garage over night. This morning I disconnected the positive battery term and touched it to ground. Hooked up my OBD and still have two codes. PO716 and PO933. Took the truck for a drive and it shifted normally until I tried passing gear. Then the crap hit the fan again. Dropped down into second at 40 mph and then went down into first gear and wouldn't come out. Left off the gas for a bit then it up shifted and drove normally again. Before this all happened, from a dead stop, low gear would upshift at 5500 rpm. Now, it won't come out of low gear unless I let off the gas.. Does anyone know what OHM reading the sensors should have? Also, What voltage at the sensor connections??

Stumpy, thank you for the suggestion. I did this. Unhooked the positive and negative terminals and tied them together. Let it set over night, then hooked them back up to the battery. Took the truck for a test ride and all is well again. It's back to normal. You DA MAN!!!!

Glad I could help. Hope that continues to cure the issue.

A few years back there was a post on one of the CTD forums about shuddering during normal shifts. Trans would jump back and fourth from second to OD AND VISA VERSA. Turns out there was a solenoid inside the pan that was causing the problem. Changed mine out and solved the problem.
