How many miles per oil change on your Cummin trucks? - 11/16/19 05:59 PM

I usually don't post on here but I'm wondering what most of you guys with the 24 valve Cummins motors change your oil and filter at?
I currently have a 2006 Ram 3500 single wheel 4x4 4 door as my daily driver, I've tried to change the oil and filter between 3500 to 4000 miles, it has a little over 150,000 miles on it now.
I was told by the local dodge truck fleet salesman to change oil at 7500 miles, not at 3500 miles confused
The truck sits a lot now but I do use it to tow a 24 Ft. enclosed race car trailer with my bracket car in it, normal trace rip length is between 45 up to 850 miles depending on where I'm racing at.
I do a lot of local short trip driving also, probably around 90 % of its normal use.

01 24 Valve, 226k miles - every 7500 miles, fuel filter every 2nd oil change. Works for me...still going strong. Real clean under the valve cover, no sludge. 15 40 non synthetic...Wix filters...daily commuter, 52 miles round trip...

I'm at 530,000 Km's. It's a loaded down work truck. I changed the oil with 15w40 non synthetic every 10,000 kms'sn but since about 440k, I've been getting synthetic for the same price as non synthetic. I've always used wix filters on it, it gets a new fuel filter every 30k km's. I'm on the original cp3, second set of injectors, 3rd transmission.
A fleet manager was telling me on the big diesels they only change the oil every 35,000 kms.

Oil analysis is your friend! Get a Wix 24077 kit or 3; they're about $22 each on Amazon, but my local Auto Value has them at $15. Next time you're due, pull a sample and send it in. You'll get valuable information on your oil's condition (fuel/coolant/water contamination, additives, etc.) and a recommendation on whether to change the oil or resample at the next service interval. In my Jeep Liberty CRD, I was changing the filter at the recommended 6,750 miles and the oil every 13,000, and could have gone further. With a kit and the postage being about the same price as 2 quarts of oil, it's worth having the detailed info. Also, the reports come with the data from previous tests, and graphs showing change over time for the critical data points.

2018 Cummins 2500, oil and Mopar oil filter at 5k, Fuel filters (Mopar) at 15k. Air filter (Mopar) at 15k. Fuel filters will be changed every 10k from now on. Trans fluid and filters will be every 20k along with diffs and transfer case. Regular service is your friend. I use 15w40 syn blend oil.

'04 DR non-HO, 328,000miles. 3K for 1st 100,000 (service contract), 5K between since I've been doing them. $14.00 Walmart, Mopar filter and Chevron Delo-400 its whole life. I have used a couple different Wix filters from time to time and it currently has a K&N for the first time. It was a gift and I didn't have a Mopar filter. Fuel filter every other oil change. Trans. and diff. every 30,000. I've burnt the paint from the diff cover a couple times. Mopar diff oil is like $18.00 a quart. 4 quarts. The reusable gaskets are really good! I'm now on my second, billet, trans. input shaft after it was upgraded in 2010. Two water pumps, an injector, two APP sensors and a belt tensioner is all I've ever done to keep the engine running.

That short trip around town stuff can be hard on the oil because it never gets hot enough for long enough to boil off condensation and other contaminants so your change intervals could be a good thing. An oil analysis at your next change can tell you if it's necessary or if it's ok to run it out to 7500 which is normal. An analysis can also let you extend the drain interval to filter at 7500 and oil and filter at 15,000. Probably false economy given it's only 3 gallons of oil or so and you aren't putting on 150,000 miles a year.

04 2500 quad cab, 4WD 6 speed stick. I change the oil every 4000 miles with a Wix (NAPA Gold) every change. I change fuel and air filters every other oil change, and rotate the tires. It's got 112K miles on it, and doesn't burn a drop of oil.

2007 CTD, I run AMS OIL. Bought the truck through Dave Smith. I ran their oil until I hade 15k on the motor then switched to AMS. The interval at first was 12,000 mile however AMS changed it to 7500. This was due to the PCV system on the 07 5.9s running into the valve covers. Caused the oil to become dirtier a lot sooner. I checked the oil religiously using WIX filters. I also do a valve adjustment every 100k. At that time the valve cover is cleaned out removing any soot or sludge that has built up. Getting ready to turn over to 300k

I had 561000 miles on my 2006. I used Mobil Delvac 15W40 with Donaldson oil filters every 5000 miles. I NEVER had the valve cover off! My buddy has the truck now with over 600,000 on it. Runs as good as it did new. Fuel filter every 10,000 miles and greased every week when I had it.

When I bought my’06 the dealership offered free oil changes for life. They call me every 4 months and ask if I want to schedule an appointment for my 3K Mile oil change. I have 115k on it now and still going strong.

Re: How many miles per oil change on your Cummin trucks? - 11/24/19 02:57 PM

Like mentioned before oil analysis is your friend. I put about 5k a year on my 06 now and it gets changed just once annually . I did have the oil analyzed for a few years and I kept stretching intervals when it was my daily driver and I could easily go past 6k. I think there are tons of variables when it comes to this question so you need to get a baseline and go from there. My truck has 145k on it now and every time I have to tear into the engine (self induced) it looks great. I think most oils are sufficient now nowadays but have ran Rotella t6 in this truck for the past 10 years.

Re: How many miles per oil change on your Cummin trucks? - 11/24/19 08:35 PM

I friend of the family drove a older 12 valve 5.9 in a dulley 3500. Never did short city driving, all long haul. He was running a GSA contract run from Seattle to LA, then to NY, NY and back to Seattle pulling a 5th wheel 6 car ramp trailer. Last I knew he had over 1.2 Million miles on the truck and never has had any engine issues. He was doing the 3,000 Oil Change Interval until warranty run out.
He then started doing Blackstone Labs testing. He did add the AMSOIL by-pass fitration system and Blackstone tests had him just changing all oil filters at 15,000 miles and with the filter makeup oil and what oil added as needed he was at about 50,000 miles before Blackstone said to dump it. They said the oil was good for another 15,000 miles but it would then be borderline on the TBN scale. Since he was doing about 100,000 miles a year it was two changes a year, Rotella T6 5W40 winter time and T5 15W40 summer.

I have an ‘02 2500 Cummins 4x4. I change every 10,000 miles I use Valvoline Premium Blue and Fleetguard Stratapore filters. Bought the truck a couple years ago at 130k, I’m at 250k now.

If I can just get the damned thing to STOP going in and out of lockup it’d be a good truck. I might switch to an NV5600 6 speed.
Other than that, no performance mods. No chip, no tuner no injectors, stock transmission. I’d really like to turn up the heat on it, what am I missing? More go power would be nice.

You need to relocate and sheild that large blk/tan ground wire that runs over the top of your alternator. Made a lot of $$ doing that back in the day.

I only put around 2000 miles a year on my '04 1 ton with 24 valve. I change the oil once a year, and sometimes slip to 18 months depending on circumstances. Clearly, this is not my daily driver!

I go 4000-4500 miles on my 05, usually an analysis every other. Only put about 6k per year towing to and from track. No daily driving. Rotella 15-40, stratophore filter. Probly a little early, but it’s cheap insurance. Jim

Re: How many miles per oil change on your Cummin trucks? - 01/05/20 03:17 AM

I was told by the dealer fleet sales rep to change it at 7500 miles, I haven't done that ever. I was trying to change the oil and filter around 3500 miles.
I've heard the oil will quit getting dirty right away after changing once the motor gets broken, between 35,000 to 60,000 miles, mine hasn't done that yet at 151,000+ miles shruggy
I'm going to try changing it around 5,000 miles now for a while and see if I like that or not luck
Thanks for the help to all of you bow up

Passenger side near the battery..... large blk/tan wire. You’ll see it goes to two gray connectors mounted on the batt tray. I eliminate those connectors by removing the terminals and solder them. Next I remove the wire from the harness past the alternator and cover the blk/tan with foil tape and some black convoluting cover. I then route the wire over the black metal top alternator mount. I’d post picts if photobucket didn’t go to L! If you want picts pm me your phone # and I’ll text them.

I go between 10,000 and 12,000 miles on mine. I have used Amsoil since around 80,000. I send a sample in to be tested every time. 254,000 miles and going strong.

Bought my 07 2500 from Dave Smith over 13 years ago. I’m now pushing 300k. Most of which was up in Yakima. Now in Phoenix. Started running Amsoil 15/40 starting at 15k. Doesn’t use a drop of oil. I change at every 7500 miles. Using WIX filters.

Nature of the beast Cab. Some are worse than others. My Cat stays fairly clean looking right up to 12,000 miles. My N14 Cummins was black by the end of the driveway. I think ring design and better filtering on the Cat account for most of the difference.

Cummins filter specs are considerably more lax than Cat. A Cummins N14 fuel filter is 10 micron. A Cat is 3.
