Did it run fine after it restarted? How did it die, like turning the ignition off or did it sputter and die?

Shot in the dark here, but I had the same thing happen with my 5.2 dakota.
It was the fuel pump going bad. If you have to replace one, take the bed loose and get a couple buddies to help you move it. Fuel pump ring is right on top of the tank. You will need a strap wrench or BIG channel locks to remove the threaded ring.

Corroded wire under hood on left front fender. Don't recall which one but very common issue with the generation of Dakota

That would be the junction where 5 wires that are ignition power are factory spliced together (mine were pink with a blue tracer) between the master cylinder and the under hood fuse box on the newer ones, and between the master cylinder and the battery on the older ones.
My 93 would loose the power to the fuel pump relay in the under hood fuse box, but I've seen them loose power to the cam sensor and the crank sensor also. If you have something in the ignition circuit that doesn't have power when its suppose to, look for the junction to have broken wires. Gene

ive replaced the fuel pump at least twice over the 23 years ive owned it,and ive replaced the crank sensor also over the years,it just DIED,no sputter, just like i shut the key off,i think but cant remember for sure that i looked at the wiring several years ago and it was fine,i ordered a new mopar crank sensor today.......we will see!!

Re: 92 Dakota died - 11/04/18 06:16 AM

late update, replaced the crank sensor and thought it was fixed???,i used a genuine mopar part!,drove for a few miles and it died again,no sputter just wham its dead interesting thing,if i just shift to netural or park and crank it wont start,BUT if i turn the key off then back on and crank it starts,i replaced the ign switch and tumbler a while back, surely not a loose wire where it plugs into the switch???? i did splice the wires and plug that go to the switchmbut that was 20 yrs ago,i left the wires long and stuffed them down into the column,i suppose its possible one of them has rubbed bare and shorting out,tho that seems far fetched,i looked at the wiring harness junction several yrs ago and it was ok,dont have a code reader and cant count flashes as this is obd1 ,IF it has set a code??
i hate these search and destroy missions, anyone else have a problem like this?,i ran a wire years ago from the fuelpump to near the battery,i can make the pump run by touching the wire to the hot post of the battery
i know its a old truck with 348,000 miles but ive owned it since 95 and its my trusty backup that ill never sell

Re: 92 Dakota died - 11/04/18 06:58 AM

I had a 91 dakota that would die and not start turned out the wires in the fuel pump housing 2 of them at the top had broke and were barely touching and would move when the fuel was sloshing around in the tank is the check engine light on .

All parts will die when you use them, some sooner than others shruggy work
How long are you shooting to use this truck?
It has given you good service in my opinion up

FWIW, I have a 93 with 160K and it's been one of the most useful vehicles I have ever owned. So I watch threads like these with great interest.

I prefer the N bodies over the AN body ones any day of the week.

I wish LMC or someone would offer more parts for the N series.

Re: 92 Dakota died - 11/17/18 03:52 AM

I had a 92 Dakota that I put close to 200k on it (212 total). During that time I replaced two fuel pumps, one ignition coil, one idle air solenoid, and repaired corroded wiring below the fuse box on the left inner fender. All of those would cause the truck not to run.
