440 truck guys n here please - 09/14/18 12:55 AM

I need to find out how long the dipstick should be. Mine reads way off for some reason. I either need to find a longer one, trim the tube, or given my lack of time, the right one to just put in and be done.

Thanks

Does your tube go into the side of the pan or the block?

My twocents until someone chimes in with a measurement.

The tube itself is nothing special, just a length of hardline. If you know you have the correct amount of oil in it based on what you put in, you can make your own tube and adjust it (re:cut) to where the dipstick reads correct.

I did this with a truck I dropped a 440 into using parts from a 400 (the tube went MIA during tear down in my case). Sorry, this was back in the '90's, truck is long gone.

The flat thin strip of the dip stick measures 32-1/2" long.

It might be from a van...maybe an ambulance.

Wow. Mine is like 25. No wonder. Thanks

Big time disappointment to find this out. Truck is all there and all factory. Except somehow the dipstick.

Mine could be from a van.

I have a few of them and I don't think they are that long. Mine are like 24-3/8" for the part that goes into the tube. I'll him more pics tomorrow.

I will check what I got on my 440

I got a new inverted flare steel tube stock and cut 1 flared end off.

bent it into the shape I needed copying the piece of old broken tube.

top of tube bolted to exhaust manifold, I removed the flat tab & welded it to the new tube after a mock up fitting and trimming the tube.

I have a 6 qrt pan so I dumped 5 qrts in/ran engine to fill filter/ trimmed tube to get dead on ADD mark (scratched up a mopar stick from something? to use) then added 6th qrt and was dead on the full mark.

best part was I could have moved the tube further away from header tubes but it went right into the stock location more or less so I went that way on it.

if you are using a car 440 with a truck pan be sure to plug the car oil tube hole in the block.

If mine read at all with 6 in it wouldn’t be an issue. I think I’ve found a dorman for a powerstroke that will work assuming it fits in the tube. If I can get a chance to pull one from my other truck and see. It’s a little older ford than the one I found that listing for.

OK I have some dip sticks for BB trucks. All are 27-3/8" overall length.
All have a white knob on the handle.
I have an extra stick but not a tube if you are still needing one. Shoot me a PM.
