87 Ram 50 - 08/15/18 06:26 AM

I have a Ram 50 4x4 and I'm looking to do away with the 4 wheel drive part. Rear is not a problem but not sure what to do in the front. I'm want to do a 5.7 Gen III- 904 cross over. Should I try and find another 2x frame or does someone make the parts to change to a reg front end? Can it be done? Any other options?
I do have a 74 Mustang II that I could cut the front suspension out of to use, feasible?
Truck is in great shape with no rust, extended cab.

I'm not sure if there are any differences between the 4wd and 2wd frames. Best bet would be to try to locate a 2WD 87 or newer Ram 50 and compare the frames. If the frames are the same I'd find a doner 2wd and transfer the 2wd front suspension pieces. If not it will probably be a lot simpler and cheaper in the long run to just swap out the whole frame from to a 2wd version.

For a variety of reasons I would definitely NOT use the Mustang II front suspension.

Depending on what you want to do with the truck you probably also want to keep in mind the stock rear end is probably geared pretty low (3.54 or 3.90) If you are planning on doing much driving with it especially if you stay with relatively short tires a rear end swap or OD transmission might be in order.

My daily driver is a 2wd 87 Ram 50 with a small block and 5 speed. I'm using stock front and rear suspension and it works great....basically it's a ball to drive and I've even taken it back to the mid west a few times.

Rear would be a narrow 8-3/4 , tubbed, larger tires. Street-strip truck. Guy next door who does street rods tells me to do an S10 frame, but that might be too much work.

Does the D50 4x4 have front leaf springs?
For a few years, Jeep had a tube front axle that bolted in place of the 4x4 front axle on 2wd Jeeps. It might be an option to locate one of those axles to replace your front 4x4 axle, if it can be made to fit. Picture Gasser class ride, front axle on leaf springs, raised up or not, with the modern Hemi...Gene

Looked again today underneath, been awhile, it has upper and lower control arms with half shafts like a front wheel drive. Also has TBs. I'll try to find 2 wheel hubs and spindles (don't like the six lugg though. He also suggested Ranger frame-spindles = 5 x4-1/2
