16" rim for 72-80 D100 - 01/08/18 02:10 PM

Hey Guys,

Have any of you found a decent looking 16" rim that bolts to a 72-80 full size D100 type truck?
I'm in the market for an older D100 so I can tow my Coronet.
So I'd like some added stability and tire options.

If I've done my research right, it looks like the 72-80 D100's are 5 x 4-1/2 bolt pattern.

Thanks.

They were optional on pre-72 D100s so maybe they were an option on 72-80 trucks. I think the factory ones were pretty narrow though. There should be plenty of aftermarket wheels that would work.

Plenty O 15" options On Stockton.
I never would have thought of them.

So far i've only seen 1 16" steel wheel once

I didn't see much of anything on that site either.
Did some rambling's of it either closing or being sold off.

As I'm in the shopping for a 72-80 truck mode currently.
Most of what I look at needs work and that's okay.
Bound to low buck route as the student loan goes until 2032.

There are ZERO 72-80 D100 or D150's long beds left in upstate NY or nearby states.
Or they're out of my price range.

I want a 72-80 to tow my Coronet on the open trailer.

And of course the coolness factor of a 70's truck towing a 60's car

So modern tires and wheel will help with stability.

The Crown Vic 18 hole cop car wheels are 16 x 7 and were available on Explorers, Mercury Grand Marquis, etc. Not too expensive. The rub is the center bore is a little small. I run them on my '64Dog. They bolted right on the rear, need a slim spacer on the fronts to bypass the center hub fit. Or you could open them up a bit.

If buying new, skip 16s.
Much better tire choices for 17s.
See if you like any of the late model mustwang wheels.
Many are very reasonably priced, and available used.

Not a bad idea on the 17", balancing the old school look and modernity will have it's compromise for sure!

The struggle is keeping it towing stable and not car-show flashy

I bet some Googling will help!

Stockton will custom build any size around that police wheel or other factory Chrysler steel wheel.

Years ago a friend had a 69 d100 short box with 16's. I remember them as being narrow. I think he was running 7.50 x 16 tires.

Do this. With a tall truck side wall you won't really notice the extra inch of rim and 17" tires are far more available than 16".

Perfect, thank you very much fella's.

These are some good ideas that I needed for the wheels.
Wanting the old truck look that'll act more modern is a balance.

Also looks like bypassing the AMP gauge is helpful.

Converting from a slant six to Magnum or LA 360 looks simple enough.

It really truly is my biggest problem finding a 72-80, or the 68-71 D100 or D150 in 2wd.

But the northeast as in New York state is NOT the place to look for bargain priced trucks for these years. Pennsylvania is dry too.

Found a 79 D100 8 foot box 2wd in Indiana for $750 that runs and is a daily driver.
Found another 75 D100 8 foot box 2wd that runs and drives in Alabama for $1500.

These year trucks grow on trees on the west coast.
but I bet it's a min of $1,000+ to ship one.

thanks again!

This is a Keystone 16X7 on an '84 8 lug on a 3/4 ton axle under my '76.
Got them at Whitlock.
Had 'em in the boxes for decades.
Finally used 'em this past summer.
Got a pair of 17X8's from Summit to go with them.
They are all black no chrome.
I don't have pictures of those yet.
Got those at Summit.
Many sizes and styles are available.

I would recommend finding the tire you want,
then getting the rim to go with 'em.
