1972-1973 ish instrument cluster condensor? ADDED PIC - 01/03/18 01:46 AM

I purchased a used metal instrument cluster frame to replace the plastic one in my 1979 Power Wagon to help avoid the ammeter meltdown issue with these trucks (as I was advised to do by several people). Eventually I will do some of the other things advised, but I wanted to get into the dash right away anyhow and replace a bunch of bulbs and faded gauges.

The 1972 ish one has two of what look like condensors attatched to circuit board. One is attached near speedometer and plugged to instrument voltage regulator, and the other wasn't plugged to anything, but was attached to circuit board near ammeter. The stock 1979 one did not have any. Is this because one is plastic and the other metal? Does the one near ammeter get plugged to ammeter (I'm assuming)?

Got this pic off the web. It's not mine but just like it except mine's not rusty.

I think those are filters for feedback from the alternator. The meltdown usually occurs from corroded connections, corroded wiring, and poor, missing grounds. More importantly the dash layout is similar in older trucks but they're not the same.

Ok, thank you. I did quite a bit of reading on the meltdown and hopefully eventually will be able to also do some re-wiring too. I did clean up all the connections on my recently acquired metal frame one and my truck end connections, although they looked pretty clean. I read up on Mopartruckparts Tech section and followed their advice, getting one of the last years of the metal frame (1975?)used off of feebay, and I swapped that in yesterday (again, not the one pictured, I think that's an earlier one and mine isn't corroded). I think the earlier metal ones had the big loop in the frame on the left side, like the above one? Those condensors were never mentioned so I was curious. Everything seems to be working well and fits well. The metal frame is supposed to prevent the melting of the frame, along with keeping clean connections of course.

Thanks again,

Larry
