03 1500 9 1/4 rear end swap issue

03 1500 9 1/4 rear end swap issue - 12/29/17 02:49 AM

My original Sure-grip 9 1/4 rear end blew up a while back, so I swapped the rear end from another 03 truck I had. Both trucks are two-wheel drive. Of course this one had a horrible pinion whine at 45-55 mph. I’ve run it for over a year, but it developed a vibration and the howl went away. I bought another rear from a 4wd ‘03, and the plug for the ABS tone ring is different. Luckily, the wires were cut, so I wired it to existing two wires. Colors were different, so I did the guess. Now my dash ‘Brake’ and ABS lights are on. Switched wires around to no help. Any ideas?

Buy another one

or

Put a piece of electrical tape over the offending light.

Because the ABS light is on, no more cruise control...
I guess I’ll get another sensor

I replaced the speed sensor with a new one for an ‘03. Replaced the plug with my original. The ABS and brake light are still on. Next step???

Disconnect the battery and let it clear the codes. Does the rear axle assembly have abs sensors on it?

I don't know the answer to this,
but are all the tone rings the same?
Is it worth taking off the cover and counting the teeth?

Disconnected the battery for a minute or so, ABS / brake lights are still on. Didn’t drive it yet, but did notice that when I turned cruise control on, the indicator lit up. Would not do that before. I’ll get it on a code reader and see what it says. The speed sensor that was in this rear end is a 2005 and up, so I guess this rear was changed out in the truck I got it from.

I don’t know that either, but they did change the speed sensor style in 05/06. That makes me wonder.
I had the cover off initially, to check condition, and I put $60 worth of Royal Purple gear oil in it. Cover stays on for now.

You could always save the new fluid and reuse it.

I believe you need to touch battery cables ends together for approx 15 seconds with headlights on to deplete any memory in computer. I've had to do this with my 07 minivan & also my 2011 ram 1500 to completely clear code.

Key dance to display codes doesnt cost anything.

When you connected the rear axle speed sensor wires back together how did you do it?

The correct way per Dodge is to solder them and used heat shrink tubing.

With the low voltage that the sensors use crimp connectors could be an issue.

I’ve never heard that before...

Of course I used crimp style connectors...

Ok. I hadn't either. What's it hurt to try it? Worked for me. Makes no difference to me. This is why I generally don't reply.

Still haven’t got a code reader on it yet, but I did take terminal off and touched them together for a while. That DID clear my check engine light, but ABS and Brake dash lights are still on.

Re: 03 1500 9 1/4 rear end swap issue - 01/22/18 01:16 AM

Plugged in a code reader and it came up “NO CODES” on the OBD II scanner. So now I have no cruise control with these lights on the dash. (ABS / Brake) This rear end has no sensors for ABS, only wires go to speed sensor.
Now what?

Is it possible one of the front sensors went bad in the time you were trying to repair the rear?

Pulled truck in garage in morning, and out at end of day. Lights on once swap was done. Going to look at the fuses, relay, and brake light switch this weekend.

Well I'm going or try that on my Ram Van (engine light on)
Make sure you've blead the brakes good, I replaced two lines and the ABS lights stayed on till the third time I bled them. I guess that little bit of air was messing it up.

Didnt have to bleed brakes, has disc brakes on the rear. Just hung calipers and lines with zip ties. I will check out fuses, relays, tomorrow.

There should be a stored code on the ABS module, not the PCM. If it shows up immediately at key on I would look at the wiring you had to modify for the sensor in the rearend or the sensor itself. If it doesn't show up until you start driving it may have to do with the tone ring that is in the diff carrier.
