Opinions on buying a used Ram sold new in Canada - 12/28/17 01:43 AM

I'm looking at a low mile 2014 4wd 1500 Ram that is currently in the US but was originally sold new in Canada.
I'm told the factory warranty is voided being from Canada, the seller knew that when he bought it and bough a supposedly good aftermarket warranty.

Is buying a truck like this a bad idea?
Any other issues I should be aware of?
Can the navigation system be activated in the US?

Thanks.up

Pretty sure the nav works in US - on my truck & car - sold new in Canada, it is no issue. Pretty sure it is loaded with North American roads . . .course updating from Mopar is probably $$$ . . . Only issue I would see is the warranty thing . . . make sure the exhaust manifolds outter end studs/bolts are not broken - seems to be issue on these trucks . . . get ticking noise like lifter, when it is cold . . .warms up and manifold expands to close up and no more noise . . . BUT . . leave it long enough and get warped manifold. . . . FCA has known about this for long time, but no recalls ever issue . . . most dealers keep studs/nuts and gaskets in parts department !! . . .

With the dollar exchange, you are already 30% ahead !!! . . .so finding a nice truck, would be lower cost than a USA truck . . . course checking with a GOOD dealer, would let you know about the warranty issue . . .

Good luck

Cheers

Thanks for the info.

The truck definitely doesn't have any of the factory warranty which is why the current US owner bought an aftermarket warranty when he purchased the truck.

I wasn't aware the newer Hemi engines still had exhaust manifold issues.

How much warranty would a 4 year old truck still have anyway? I don't see any particular issues you would face so I would go for it if it's a truck you want.

You'll probably be stuck with a instrument cluster that has the KPH numbers in large font. The biggest issue is the warranty which you've already found a fix for anyway.

Do you live in a county in Ohio with emission testing? If yes, if they just check for codes you probably will be fine but I don't know what Ram does with the OBD reporting for Canadian sold vehicles. Some other manufacturers just send the USA engine calibration over to Canada so those would be fine at an emissions check station.

Just throwing this out there. I have a friend who is currently fighting a used car dealership as we speak. Purchased a 16 GMC with low miles. The battery kept dying every few days. The used car dealer took it into GM and it has water damage. They pulled the carpet up and there is signs of flooding.

My buddy ran the car fax and it is clean. He has a friend who is in the is a cop who does grand theft ran all of the VINs from the dealer and he gets everything from Canada. From what he was telling me in Canada they don't have to report any damage? Long story short, factory warranty is now voided, truck was at the dealer for a month and has some new modules put in it....

I live in B.C. Canada, damage over $2,000 is recorded. It doesn't take long to hit $2k, I smoked a deer and took out the grille and bumper on my 05 and that did it.

The truck he got was from up there! I guess there had been flooding earlier that spring....

I dunno, maybe if the original owner was near Kelowna and not dialed in enough to not park it near water. They had some fresh water flooding in some parts of that area but nothing that people didn't have enough time to react to and drive a vehicle to higher ground.

I'm sure some owners don't put in a claim if the damage isn't too excessive. That way they avoid the bs, and don't get a typical insurance increase. The owner just cleans it up themselves and sells it off. There would be no record of damage that way.
Loop holes, deception, etc. You just have to check everything to the fullest, no matter what you purchase these days.
