2007 Chrysler Aspen - 11/04/17 02:33 AM

So I’m looking at purchasing a 2007 Chrysler Aspen. If you’re not sure what that is, it’s based on the full size Durango. It’s in really nice condition, low miles-about 123,000 (which is less than my current 09 Journey, and runs really strong. Looking to find out if there is anything to watch out for on these trucks?

One area of concern for me is the 4.7 v8. Last I heard, these engines had some issues, but I’ve been away for awhile and don’t remember specifics. I seem to remember something about an oiling system problem.

Any advice and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I ran one to 165k (5.7) with few issues. Watch the 9 1/4" rear for pinion leaks... expensive if you don't catch it. The 4.7 has earned a reputation for great sensitivity to maintenance especially oil... and expensive failures otherwise.

So what could I do to ensure that this truck doesn’t have any problems concerning the oiling system? Especially with out knowing it’s past maintenance history. Would running some sort of cleaner thru the system before changing the oil help? Also, does using a full synthetic oil like Mobile 1 help?

The cam timing chain tensioners are hydraulic and are the culprit. If the oil change schedule is key for them.Maybe look for sludge/buildup in the valve cover for a reference.
