61 willys jeep cj5 4x4 - 10/08/17 03:51 AM

oh my inner flippin rynotruck!! laugh2
maybe someone here likes these things
this stray followed me home
i told it to scram but it didn't listen laugh2
there is some nice sweet jersey rot on the body and floors
windshield frame,doors are trash
but the main frame rears drivetrain is all there.
keeping with the rynotruck theme devil
the trans is locked up solid!! whiney
and it took some work just to get the clutch to release
but there is another good trans in the back with a pile of parts
the engine was rebuilt not long ago
and the thing only has 62k on the clock
the guy had a pile of receipts
going back to '90
i did throw a batt in it
and the engine cranked over nice and should start
with some messing around.
i want to get it running first
then rip it apart and either patch or replace the body.
i don't know what i'm really doing with it yet
or why i even got it
i only have scrap value into it so far.
the guy was just happy to send it down the road to
stop devaluing his neighborhood..
his wife was happy to see it go
but i do know body parts are cheap and plentiful
and go into the 70's.

WOW!!!
That thing is hideous.
I'd repair the floors and brakes.
Clean the glass.
Make it safe.
Get it running and drive as it sits.

Re: 61 willys jeep cj5 4x4 - 10/08/17 06:27 PM

what pushed me to grab it was how cheap the body parts are
when I looked them up shock
its not like a mopar
it was suppose to be a runner when parked but the trans being locked up solid killed that buzz so I have to deal with that
I had to yank the drive shafts to be able to move it
from its last home.
I want to get it up and running again first then attack the body
I would guess it sat for the last 20 years

another factor for getting it
I will say the kids really dig it more then the cars
one said he would buy it if I was selling.
and my brothers kid even showed some interest
who ignores the cars so kids dig old jeeps.. lol

it is one ugly top
the cap of it is fiberglass and the sides are metal.
it will get tossed for something better.

that is the plan!
i dig this one the more i play with it.
i like your half soft top
island beach state park beach buggy for surf fishing
is the goal.
after messing around a little today,dropping/cleaning the tank
cleaning the points
she will run just fine when dumping fuel down the carb!
it needs a fuel pump rebuild cry
no smoke or noise it ran smooth

i dug thru the huge pile of extra parts in the back
and the extra trans seems like its good shifting thru it.
so i can swap out the frozen one if it comes to it.
that will be the next step after the fuel pump
i want to get it yard running first
then the brakes
before throwing any real bucks at it.
i did learn the top is original as are the doors
so i will hang on to them.
the doors are shot
it already is called the Jurassic park jeep

That would be cool to get it running safely, screw down some sheet metal floors and maybe occasionally spray it down with some miracle grow to keep the outside alive and drive it until the novelty runs out and then properly restore it or let it Rest In Peace

about 500 bucks of tin will make it whole
which is less then a AMD quarter..lol
the body almost bolts together, its easy to work on
the key to me was getting it running and moving without costing much
and that looks very attainable
a fuel pump and brakes and i'm there
so i'm moving forward
if there was a blockage there
i might of just punted on it as i have many fish to fry
its not like i have any money into it so far
i think i will have more money into a soft top
or tires and rims then anything else.
i might just pull the top off
leave it under a tree
fix the rest and put it back on as is..lol
i just don't have the heart to powerwash it.

They are still maintenance intensive when you do get it running, but parts are stupid cheap for most any pre-86 Jeep/Willys product. Even the WW2 era stuff... $2500 gets you an entire new tub!

i will update progress on this hulk and get more pics
for anyone interested
once its gets cold
i probably won't look at it much until spring.
as it already took me way off of what i was doing
that i have to get back to.
but i'm having fun playin with this thing. laugh2

hopefully i get it running and moving before winter.
i yanked out the fuel pump today to rebuild it.
while i wait on tracking down and getting those parts
i decided move on and to dig into the trans
so i pulled the shifter and cover off
and i now i know why it was locked up. frown

what was happening was the windshield frame
is rotted and it leaked bad
the water went down to the dash to the rusted floor
and it drained straight into the trans
it looked like it was under water
the shift rails were frozen solid to the cover
and all the gears were all rusted up.
so out it all came.
when the trans hit the ground water poured out of it..lol
luckily the other trans looks like a winner
it just needs to be cleaned up some
and dressed up with parts off the old trans.

i will also clean up and paint the x member
and detail and clean up a few of the parts
like the z bar pivot and linkage. in evaporust.
throw all the bolts in the tumbler and clean them up.
one of the clutch linkages was almost worn thru so i will have to find or fabricate one of them.
i figure it will take me
a week or 2 to clean up everything
so its all ready to go back in and then let it rip.
i could rush and just slap it back together
but i might as well clean it all up while its all apart.

Cool,my first Jeep was a '65 Kaiser CJ5.Powered by the same F-head 4-cylinder as yours,'till I broke the crank @ the #4 rod journal. They are as wide as a V8 journal is for both rods but for one cylinder.Mine cracked at a 45* angle, and would still run.If you let the clutch out it would saw the bellhousing with the flywheel! Mine had a nice aluminum top also, sliding plexiglass windows and all.
