WHAT IS A GOOD TANK TO USE BEHIND REAR AXLE?

The ramcharger tank went behind the rear axle. it fits between the frame rails so I don't think it will interfere with the stepside at all. you will need to Fab some mounting brackets or steal them from a ramcharger.

Several of the hot rod guys use a 1st gen mustang tank. It will fit between your frame rails without much effort. As stated above the RC tank is rear mounted but holds 35gal IIRC.

Unless you use the smaller steel tank that was the standard tank on a ramcharger. I forget exactly maybe 22gal. But either way I don't think the smaller steel tanks have been available in the aftermarket for some time.

I swapped a ramcharger tank into a '76 Club Cab I had back in the '90's.

If you find a donor ramcharger and it has a metal tank, its the smaller tank. All 35 gallon tanks were plastic.

Either tank uses the same crossmembers, just the straps are different.

And I'm not 100% sure, but, I think the smaller tank was used predominantly on two wheel drive RC's (mid '70's, not the later RC's).

If you go with the RC tank, you need to swap in the crossmembers from the RC. The tank will dictate where they need to go. The hardest part of swapping the crossmembers is getting the factory rivets out.

If you decide to go Mustang, disregard what I just said.... biggrin

I had an 80 4x4 with a 2nd tank. It was plastic, and was located behind the rear axle. I believe it was 18 or 20 gal. Would have been the rear auxiliary factory tank. I have no idea if it is still available or not.

My saddle tank was cracked, so I disposed of it and only used that rear tank for the 12 years I used that chassis (it was under my 50 Dodge 4x4), so I know it wasn't bigger then 20 gal. Gene
