06 3500 exhaust rot out - 05/09/17 02:29 AM

Just found today, muffler and tailpipe totally rusted, gone where connected. Has anyone had this problem? Only 114,000 miles in va, not too much salt on roads like up north. Thought they lasted longer than this. I have a 87 Ford F-350 and still has original exhaust.

The original exhaust rotted off my '05 Ram CTD a few years back with around 125k. I installed a Magnaflow replacement

My 06 2500 exhaust was shot at 110,000. Even my Y pipe manifold flanges were ready to fall off. Put on a walker Y pipe with converters and walker muffler and tail pipe. BTW, I sprayed the new exhaust with high temp clear VHT paint. Lots of salt here.

My 07 exhaust rotted off at the axle 3 yrs ago. Found it when I got home from a trip to OH and had smoke coming out from under the bed cover. Burnt up a bed liner and suitcase. Has 88k mi now. Very little snow/salt here, just cheap azz metal like the bed and cab corners are made of.

Our 2005 hemi durango has had rust in the rear quarter for 4-5 years now. Part of the muffler outer skin came loose last fall. It was not leaking any exhaust, yet. I put a large hose clamp all the way around the muffler to hold it all together. It is still together after this past winter.

Now it's in storage and we plan to drive it again for next winter but I got a felling the rest of the exhaust system needs replacement before next winter. Sitting it will rust some this summer. It has 104K miles on it

Sorry dudes, but my chevy and ford trucks at work last longer.

Muffler on the 02 had holes in it by 2010, 135k. It got replaced 2 years later and the replacement is failed in the same manner.

The y pipe and converter are not looking so great but until its cracked and broken through its staying.

Factory exhaust is usually 409SS, it will still rustout just somewhat slower than any aftermarket aluminized junk. Daimler pinched pennies wherever it would show the least.

I sprayed my new walker stuff with the VHT clear coat high temp paint and the exhaust stills looks real good.

Walker aftermarket exhaust is junk. It lasts about three years around here before it rusts from the inside out, so clearcoating it won't help.

I used to get free lifetime replacements of the muffler, but not the pipes, if I could find the receipts and bought the parts locally.

Haven't tried it with mail order parts.

So what brand exhaust do you recommend?

Magnaflow is a good choice for longevity in all season driving. Stainless Steel pipes and clamps. Mufflers seem to be good quality as well. More $$$ up front but do it once and forget about it. Lifetime warranty.

I don't know what's up with the pipes these days but my 87 Dodge W150, that I owned since almost new, still had it's original, solid exhaust pipes on it when I sold it a few years back with 218,000 miles on it. Went thru a few mufflers though and a cat.

My 06 QC rotted off at the end of the muffler in february at 196,000 miles. It is a 4.7 gas. The tail pipe looked new, so I bought a new Walker replacement muffler and reused my tailpipe. Just like new.

Short trips will kill any exhaust except the high $$ stainless. The only reason the exhaust is lasting 10 or more years is because the newer factory installed pipes are thicker then they used to be.

The combustion process creates acid, and it takes 30 minutes of running time AFTER the motor reaches operating temp, to remove the acid from the exhaust. If your not eliminating that acid, your exhaust is getting eaten from the inside out. The exhaust joints and flanges will be the first place for the damage to show up.

Then we can add the modern ice melt many highway departments are dumping on the roads that is more corrosive then salt is, so the outside can be eaten away as well. Gene

The Walker Dynomax is aluminized mild steel. There are other systems out there that are plain mild steel, which is worse yet.

The original equipment pipes are heavier gage steel, and at least the front part is 409 stainless.

The original muffler I removed from my F450 weighed half again what the Walker replacement did.

There are several aftermarket systems which claim to be some variety of stainless steel. Unfortunately, most of them are obnoxiously loud, and would be at home in a high school parking lot.
