Dakota lights - 04/22/17 03:14 AM

Having a weird issue with my 96 Dakota. If i turn on the high beams they are fine for about a minute...then they go out. Sometimes for 2 seconds and come back on....other times its longer. When i go to low beam they come right back on.

I dont have a problem with the low beams and the dash lights stay on

Ive cleaned up all grounds and connectors under the hood . The headlight switch is new.

Anyone had this happen?
Any ideas ?

Are the headlight bulbs OEM or OEM replacements or the high power "bright" aftermarket bulbs? Many of the aftermarket bright lights draw too much current.
There could also be corrosion inside the headlight feed wires, resistance creates heat, and it sounds like the wiring is getting hot.

It may be time to set up the headlights on relays. Gene

Does the high beam use its own relay separate from the low beam? I'd check there too

well...i made my own circuit today because the low beams cut out the other night. Im done chasing wiring on the old truck .

New 30 amp toggle switch with a 30A fuse---runs the low or high beams .

Done---works perfect. None of the wiring gets hot.
