Van Sport Mirrors on your truck

Van Sport Mirrors on your truck - 03/09/17 09:40 PM

You may have noticed that you can still find the truck sport mirrors (Red Express) on ebay, but they are usually around $500 for a chrome set. This may be your only option if you want a correct set for your Red Express. You may have seen some of the van versions (4 hold) that look the same, but are painted, they are a little different.

The van mirrors have a curved base on the mount that fits the concave surface of the van door. Our trucks are flat in this area, so they don't fit very well. Also, the mounting holes are a little different.

I wasn't aware of this until I bought a set of van sport mirrors. I thought it was a great deal for a painted set for $90! Here is what I'm doing to make them fit. I sanded the bases almost completely flat using a table top belt sander. The long sides still have some curvature, but they are much closer. I'll find some thick (~1/8") black rubber sheet and cut out some gaskets. This will help seal them, but more to help hide that curve/gap. I have yet to mount them. Right now I have a set of Chebbie chrome mirrors, but the passenger mirror is just about worthless as it won't fold in far enough to see straight back.

Sounds like a plan to me - no since paying top dollar unless you are doing a top dollar restoration. I used to have some chrome van bases I might need to try and find those...
