Axle width sifferences 92 to 01 8.25 to 9.25 - 01/16/17 06:26 PM

I am building up a 92 D150 clubcab. It has the stock 8.25 rear end. I will be towing with this thing and I have an 01 parts truck sitting by that has a 9.25 rear end.

I would assume the 9.25 is a stronger piece, but from the 92 1st gen ram to the 2nd gen ram is there a difference in width. I am going to fab on some 06 rear disc brakes, but still want to run some 17" US Mag Indy mags with a decent dish so I don't need a wider axle.

So, is the 01 axle wider? if so, where can I find a 9.25in rear end with 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern that is the same width or narrower than the one I have.

Dodge has been using a 9.25 on 1/2 ton pickups since the early 1970s. I believe all have been the 5.5 on 5 bolt pattern since about 1985, and 4x4 trucks had the 5.5 on 5 pattern since around 1977 or 1978. The trucks from 1972 until 1993 all had the same width axles. Any 85 through 93 9.25 axle should work in your 92 truck. I have no idea how the older axle width compares with the 94 to present.

A 9.25 rear axle in a Dakota would all be the 6 bolt wheels. Gene

Is there a certain 1/2ton that came with a 9.25 over a 8.25. How can I identify a 9.25 truck from afar?

Seems like all I have seen is 8.25s or my 73 with a 8.75.

4wd had 9.25's. Can't you measure to see if what you have will work?

Sure, I can measure and I will next time I'm out there, but typing you stay a whole lot warmer and drier.

I was hoping someone somewhere had a book that had the axle width in it and would post up.

9 1/4's are everywhere and have 12 bolt cover with stepped down axle tubes. I'd look for a 93 and older from 1/2 ton pickup or ramcharger.

Like stated above, the 9 1/4 has 12 bolts holding the cover on, I believe the 8 1/3 has 10. The axle tubes on the 9 1/4 sedge down about 12" from the center, about mid way between the spring and the center.
A 9 1/4 cover is shaped a lot like a 9 3/4 cover, where an 8 1/4 is more round/oval. I'll see if I can get pictures. Gene
