Boys 2000 cummins?

Boys 2000 cummins? - 11/17/16 08:52 PM

Ok so the boy has a 2000 dodge ram 2500 with a cummins. Really a nice truck if you like loud and rolling coal.

So the rear tail lights started to do some funky things. One would go out if applying the brakes. Now if the head lights are on the same one will go out but when putting on the brakes the reverse lights both come on.

Ok so some one told him that these trucks wiring was crap from day one and alot of these trucks caught fire because of weak wiring. Wiring problems right behind the light control switch.

Now the truck the other night riding with him started to turn on the high beams as we are driving down the road off and on all by its self..... NOT cool. So he was driving the other night and the truck now just died driving down the road at night. The red light for theft stays lit and head lights stay on but will not pump fuel. He turned on his four way flashers and the front head lights would blink back and forth light a cop car. Tee he he.

So now the truck is bricked or stuck in theft lock out. Red light on the dash stays on head lights on and no fuel. It will crank over but its not getting fuel. This has happened in the past a few times at home and we just pulled the battery cable off for a few and put it back on. It would start and run fine till now.

Had it towed into the shop. I told him he should get a new dash from the wreckers and just pull the dash and check all the wires look for bad spots and go from there. The new dash because the stock dash is cracked and broke all over the place.

If anyone has any in site or thougths about this problem please chime in. Hes going to want my ride until we get his fixed. whiney

Cheers Don.

Sounds like a ground issue.

Yes that is our first thought and there are grounds everywhere on her. We checked every ground and pull them off sanded and cleaned then re installed. Don't think it is a ground.

I agree that this sounds like a ground problem.

Time for some voltage drop testing, especially between body and battery.

Just test resistance between the battery ground and the body or how can we put a load on the ground to check for voltage drop?

There is two battery's and a bunch of grounds. This was my first thoughts too so we went over all the grounds in the truck first.

Loading a circuit is as easy as turning it on.

Checking resistance is likely to show no problems.

Test for a voltage reading between the body and battery negative post I'd like to see less than a tenth of a volt.

sounds like a few issues going on. Ground issue sounds very possible, as does the multi function switch. No security key on a 2000 so it should still crank over. Would be interesting to see if a scan tool can communicate with the JTEC or ECM.
