Anyone put a 440 in a 1994-01 Dodge Ram?

I recently purchased a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 extended cab. It runs good, but I am use to the power of my old one ton with a 440
I was thinking on maybe putting a 440 into my 1999 Ram... but I can't seam to find motor mounts and I have some questions about my gauges.. I would like the factory gauges to work if I can.
Any help would be appreciated .

I foresee a lot of fabrication and a lot of wiring in your future.

You will get to build your own motor mounts, adapt a trans and transfercase from the small block bell to the big block bell, or swap in an old trans & transfercase, build a trans crossmember, and make a new driveshaft. If you adapt the modern trans, you get to figure out how to make the computer controlled trans play well without the computer controlled motor. You can go old school, and get 8-10 mpg instead of the 15- 17 mpg the current truck probably gets.

You get past all that, making the gauges work should be the easy part.
Does your 99 have the 318 or the 360? Gene

It's a 5.9 (360) truck, as you probably know..it's not a power house. Most people that want more power , buy a diesel but I am not a diesel guy.
Edelbrock has an intake manifold for fuel injection, looks cool.

I *think* I have seen a big block in a 94-2002 ram at a show. I am positive it can be done. You might also look into throwing a stroker crank in your 360. That would get you into big block torque land.

I thoght about doing a 360/408 stroker... but I would prefer a 500 cubic inch 440 or even a 500 cubic inch 400

Anything can be done with enough determination and skills. A 500 c.i. would certainly have more get up and go then a 408 would have.

Bouchillon Performance used to have a kit to do just that. Just looked at their site and only saw a kit to do the previous generation truck BB swap. I'd give them a call and see b/c I'm 99% sure they had a kit to do what you want at one time.

a modern v10 will give you the power and the lack of mileage that you look for---also they bolt right in and have the correct loom and computer to run them....seems a mopar magaznie made a big deal out of putting one in a straight cab short bed truck back in 94-96.....

From what I have read and some of the people that I have talked to, the V10's have too many issues that I don't want to deal with.

I don't remember any V10 complaints on this board, except eating gas. I think the computer runs everything on the '99 so with the 440 you're looking at trying to make the computer think it's looking at a 5.9Mag.

I'd say the V10 is going to be close to 100 times easier than a 440.

Want more? Get a V10 out of a wrecked SRT10 QQ automatic. Don't forget the computer and transmission.

Put a 5.7 in. It's been done, there's a video on Youtube of a guy who did it. Plus 100hp right there.

The small block trans will not bolt up. Not only that, its' an RE and needs all the TPS and feedback from the Magnum to operate.

So, get rid of the trans for a 440 auto right? Well, good luck finding one and secondly: you're back to a 3sp. No overdrive. To me, that's like getting sent to jail having to run down the road at 3000rpm

Better off to put a turbo on your 360 if you hate it so much.

well, at this point I am thinking I am going to get rid of this truck. I drove it today and it wouldn't heat up to temperature, no leaks anywhere, I just put a new heater core in it this summer, all the hoses get hot but still doesn't heat up to temperature around 120-150 at most. I replaced the thermostat, with another 195, still doesn't heat up to temperature.

An extended cab will take a while to warm up, there is a lot of space to warm. Be sure all the air doors in the heater box are closing like they are suppose to, I believe there was an issue with the heater box doors not functioning correctly. My Dakota will warm up faster inside if I do not have the blower motor on high until the motor reached operating temp.

If your unhappy with the power output of the 360, and are unhappy with how the cab warms up, I suspect more things are going to bother you as you move forward. It might be in your best interest to send the truck down the road now rather then later. Once a guy gets upset with a car or truck, the little things that bug a guy keep adding on until it becomes a monster, better off to send it away before it reaches the monster stage. Gene

Yea... I am thinking if I can't get this heat problem solved soon... I will sell/trade it. I have put so much money and time into this truck I hate to but it may come down to it.

My extended cab 360 will make incredible interior heat.The Heater box in yours may need bled of air or the box trap doors may have issue as stated.I shortened the internal runners on the intake manifold by an inch or so when I replaced the bottom cover.That and trimming/radiusing the top of the throttle body helped throttle response and move the torque curve up a few hundred rpm.My truck has 4.10 gears and this helped a lot.

These magnum motors were a [censored] at cracking between the intake and exhaust valves in the heads. When looking for a used set that was good 5 fail the magflux before we found a good set.

Most likely something as simple as the heater box. My 06 even had heater box door problems with tabs breaking off ect.

the non heating units are most plagued by plugged up heater cores---you said yours was replaced---did you do it? when my latest beater diesel showed up it had the same sympton---calls for a new heater core--big job---you should first take loose the engine heater hoses and shoot a high pressure water stream in both directions through the core---if you ruin the core you already knew you were facing replacement----on my last beater cummins to come home (96) this was the remedy---heater works fine----bob

Yes, I had replaced the heater core when I had to replace the dash assembly. I didn't notice the problem with the bottom side of the heater box. Someone had melted the very bottom with something and the one door doesn't have a rod for the vacuum pod to attach to and there for the door stays shut and I got NO HEAT... but I learned that if you manually pull that door tords the seat, I have all the heat I want so I had to jury rig it until this next year and I will have to pull the dash all back out and replace my heater box. Other than that it's ready for winter. I was hoping to sell my old 1983 Dodge Plow truck and buy a new snow plow for this 99 Ram... but if I don't get what I want for the old plow truck, I am going to keep it.

I contacted Bouchillon Performance , they said they use to make the motor mounts to install a big Block into a 1994-2001 Dodge Ram but no longer make them.
The e-mail didn't say why they didn't make them but if I were to guess... it's because since Dodge has the Cummings diesel... that takes care of the power needed for most people.
