Varnished clutches in the transfer case. Typical fix is to do tight figure eight in a parking lot for a while and change the oil.

Get the correct oil from BJ's off road.

My 79 PW did that also. I never did anything to check to see if it was a problem or not (at the time, everyone simply said that's just how it is). After more than a decade of daily driving, nothing bad ever happened to it.

Doing what Mr. Runner is advising sounds like good advice. smile

Thanks for jarring my memory about the turning thing.
I'll try that and see what happens.

Jeep quadratrac cases have a small limited slip differential in the case. The np203 doesn't.

The limited slip clutch is known to varnish up and cause the jerkyness. The figure eight thing helps break up the varnish on the clutches.

De Nada. Own both transfer cases, have owned several of the q tracs over the years. It pretty normal but lots of people think it means rebuild time.

Np203 behind automatic transmission are usually smooth, but behind a stick they also get jerky. Just the nature of the beast.
